what do ye do with thin/old cull ewes?? i find that if you get rid of them early around weaning (when prices are ok) you get poor money because of their condition, now if you hold on to them and try to put on a bit of flesh till august/september the price drops down a lot and you end up still getting poor money...so its a no win situation...was thinking in fatten them with meal this year to put on very good condition but that may not work either..

cull ewe sold = some bill paid

cull ewes held on = Less grass for other stock
cull ewes fed meal = another bill to pay

in percentage terms there may seem like a big difference but in actual value terms 20 or 30 cull ewes about the place any longer than they have to be are just another pain in the ass.
for the real optimists it only take one of them to die to wipe out most of the potential 'profit' n she won't do that until she has eaten as much as she can:D

I did this year but it wasn't intended. No generally let them off when they are ready as only eating grass on other sheep. Often find mart better than factory if you only have a few at the time.

if they look healthy enough to put on a bit of weight i give them a bit of time. but a lot of my culls pretty old and are never going to put on weight. I just sell them in the mart and keep my head low when i stick them on the market for €25. - They've done they're bit and i see it as a lot better than paying €25 to the knackery
