Sorry if this is a daft question but in an interview when asked to tell a little about yourself, are they asking about your personal qualities that you can bring to the job, or just about you in general, ie your education, job history etc

I think the key to being successful in interviews is to talk about your achievements and how you stand out from the rest of your competition.

So when asked a question, like tell us a bit about yourself, you could use this as an opportunity to sell yourself.

Rather than going through your CV chronologically and listing off all your duties, you could say...

In my last job one of my major achievements was....

Its a kinda settling in question.
I'd talk about what ever you want them to remember about you after the interview is over.

But that's where people trip up often. It might be a settling in question but it sets the tone for the interview and is one of the most important to answer well, IMO.

OP, you need to tailor the answer towards things that relate to the job you are applying for. Don't go on about your personal life to much. Don't waffle. Hold their interest. This is one answer that I believe needs to be rehearsed beforehand.

Never ever mention marital status or whether or not you have children in an interview!

If they want to know something about you, just give some of your background, picking out areas you think may be specially relevant to the role you are interviewing for, and giving them enough detail that they can use it to move forward with more detailed questions.

"What are your strenghts" and "why should we hire you" are these pretty much the same questions
