So, the latest declaration from a Boards moderator on the theological issue of Catholicism is that it is 100% interchangeable with Roman Catholicism.

The Eastern Orthodox church, the Easter Rites church, the Coptic church, the Anglican church, and all the other churches which call themselves Catholic are making it up, and only the church led by the pope in Rome is the Catholic church!

My God, it's like we've gone through a time warp and landed back in the Ireland of 1935!

This forum is a joke. At least you should make it clear you are apologists for the Roman Catholic church, and that your policy is to cut off discussion where its teachings and claims are called into question. For some silly reason I assumed it was a forum for respectful adult debate.

Was the closed Feedback thread not an indication that your argument wasn't welcome?

FWIW, I'm with katydid on this argument: the level of sheer ignorance and disrespect displayed towards this issue is astounding.

It's one of the reasons I rarely post in here anymore. Can't seem to challenge Catholicism without treading on toes.

Katy, as a matter of interest, what is your view of the Church of Ireland so styling itself, despite claiming the allegiance of just about ten per cent of the population of Ireland? ( Gawd, I hope I haven't raised a hare as relentless as the one currently being coursed! )

I was of the understanding that all the major Christian Churches do indeed profess that we are "one holy, catholic and apostolic Church" (as was proclaimed at the last Ecumenical Council at Nicea) but use the word "catholic" with a small "c". Catholic, as you know katydid, means "universal". There is no fuss here. Yes, they might describe themselves as being catholic, but that is meant in the broadest sense of the word.

I very much doubt that the Anglican Church, or any of its members, are going around saying " we are the catholic Church". That is only one of the descriptive terms. It would be like me saying that I am a member of the Christian Roman Catholic Church or that I am a member of the apostolic Catholic Church. Yes, these are part of my understanding but they are used doctrinally, and not in day to day language.

You raised this in the Feedback forum, the Admins gave their considered opinion. If the forum is such a joke, you are entitled not to post here, but if you want to discuss matters relating to religion anywhere then you'll have to accept that some people use Catholic Church and Roman Catholic Church interchangeably.

You raised it on Feedback. The matter was settled, not by me, but by an Admin. Start another thread like this and you'll be banned.

The issue here was someone taking offence at the definition of a word, and not the fact that Catholicism was challenged, which it frequently is, including by posters such as yourself (which you do politely within the bounds of the charter, I might add).

Anyway, within 24 hours I've been accused of being biased against Catholics and of being an apologist for the Roman Catholic church. All part of the joys of moderating this forum!
