I'm after buying a car from a relation but it hasn't been taxed in a good few months. I wouldn't mind driving it this weekend but don't want to risk it with the tax being so far out. They haven't sent off the log book yet so could I bring it into the tax office signed and get the car taxed? Would I have to pay the back tax on it?

Yes you can tax it before you send off the book, you will have to tax it from what ever date you put on the book when you bought it, i.e if the date of sale was in june then you wont have to pay any back tax, if you bought it in may then you will have to pay for may also. You wont be liable for the previous owners tax

I believe you will have to wait until Shannon processed the change of ownership to avoid paying arrears, unfortunately.

Cheers folks. Got it taxed there and no arrears to be paid!

    That's another loophole opened then.

Not really. You can do change of ownership and tax the it in the one transaction in Dublin Motor Tax offices. Always could do.

Last time I tried it in Kildare MTO (Naas) my logbook got lost in post.

Never heard of this being done on the spot. Good to know.

Yep, you just go in and do it there and then. You VLC still takes a week to arrive from Shannon though. I done it last may on my E36.
