Hi I'm doing my leaving cert next year and I'm hoping to do general nursing but if I can't I'll do psychiatric. I was just wondering if I do psychiatric how can I work in icu? How can I transition to general nursing? Thanks :)

I could be totally wrong but I believe it is difficult to change as the courses are quite different. In 1st year most lectures are shared but as the years go on modules for psychiatric and general nursing change. Also Psychiatric nursing students only do a couple of weeks placements on medical or surgical wards and do no placements in the speciality areas ie critical care (ICU, CCU), paediatrics or A & E.
