sanding and painting old trailer

    Hi,
Any advice on a good way to get the paintwork on this fixed up? I have a good attachment for an angle grinder that should get most of the rust off. Any tips on sanding welcome.

More importantly, whats the best way to wash off all the dust after sanding and any good paint suggestions.

Turns out I cant attach a photo because I don't have enough posts, but its an all metal (angle iron and sheets) old trailer that was sitting up for 10 years. Mechanically perfect though. got new lights and wiring and checked bearings.

    Any help greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

Throw up a link to the picture, with a space between the "dot" and the "com".

These discs work well with the angle grinder, for something that size it might be worth spending a few quid and get it sandblasted. If you have a compressor give it a blast of air to clean of the dust or just wash with water and dry then paint with hammerite or rustoleum.

From recent personal experience, you need new tyres too :-) Bought a trailer, had it checked out, all fine. First long trip out one tyre shredded, replacements on close inspection were not reliable, even though they had plenty of tread. Three new tyres cost nearly as much as the trailer

    Hey,
Yeah I need new tyres too. Will get decent second hand ones. Great place if youre on the way to donegal "Martin Tyres, Lifford" that has sorted me out before.

@ Fergal B: From your experience, would it be advisable to use some kind of primer / undercoat first?

Rustoleum and most of the hammerite paints are paint and go no need for primer :)

Waxoyl the underneath (not too close to the edges though), particularly up under the wheel arches, when you are done.

Depending on the weight of the trailer getting it galvanized might be a better option?

cant recommend those flap disks enough, i had a similar project about year and a half ago, wully stripped the old paint and rust with the regular angle grinder wire brushes. i got there, but was slow enough going. I had more or less finished when the flap disks were mentioned to me. they are animals, it was alot quicker, but as i said by them i had very very little to do.
not tried using the twist brushes, whats the advantages to them? had seen them in the shops as well.
