Is an i5 possible for 400-500 euro?

    Hey all,

Ive been trawling through websites and posts on here looking for decent spec laptop for somewhere between the 400-500 hundred euro mark. Wont have to do anything too intensive, just browsing, streaming movies, ms office type multitasking jobs.

Just wondering, is this possible? I want the laptop to be somewhat future proof so ideally the best processor possible.

Hoping someone can help with suggestions :O

Hi Dave, sorry to say but you will not get an i5 for this cash. But do you really need it? If your choice of CPU is Intel, I think an i3 will be more than adequate. I would be more interested in the RAM, especially if it is a 32 bit OS. I would wait if I were you, until you can manage a few extra euro. It may be a case of 400-500 badly spent whereas another 200 would get you a far superior piece of kit.

    Strongly disagree with this.
First off- hardly anyone ships computers with 32 bit operating systems anymore.
Secondly- RAM is the cheapest possible upgrade you can do- most laptops are maxed out at 8Gb (it depends on the Bios)- so check in advance.
Thirdly- if you think outside the box- you can really get a bargain. E.g. Lenovo do laptops without operating systems (aka they boot into Linux) for 100-150 cheaper than those with licensed OSs. You can easily get a current gen i7 for under 600 (and install your own OS- which a lot of people have anyway).

Look into your options- decide what you need- I always specify discrete graphics, just incase I want to do a little gaming- but it tends to be harder on the battery.

The budget you have- will get you a very powerful machine, that will easily do anything you may throw at it (for years to come).

    Heres another possibility-

    http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00FQLVHK0/

    Its an:

    Intel Core i7 4700MQ, 2,4GHz,
    4GB RAM,
    HYBRID 1TB 5400RPM SSHD(8G),
    AMD Mars XT8750 (2GB),
    DOS OS

    EUR 529,00

Only thing- you need your own operating system (most people have a license or two knocking around).

    Here's one in power city
    http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-30-557320&pages=1&prod=557320&brands=fujitsu&image=

I'm also looking for a good spec laptop at a decent price but don't know a whole pile about computers. Not sure if Fujitsu make good ones or not, I was looking at an Acer in Curry's but think they're all gone.

    Now reduced to 499.
Also a 17.3" version available (for an extra 50)

If you have a friend willing to install the OS and apps for you- its a bit of a no-brainer......?

Its probably about 40 quid for a license for Windows 7 or 8
Its pretty much- put the disk in and follow the on-screen instructions- its not difficult (though it can take a few hours all told).
Apps- really depends on what you want installed- if you're looking for Office- it'll be another license- but even if you bought a fully configured laptop- you'd still need another license for Office (unless you decided to run with one of the open source options, like Libre etc- but if you're not really that proficient- you're probably better off keeping with what you know).

If you have a friend/colleague/family member- who is anyway IT proficient- they'll do the lot for you.

The @ and the " are transposed- and you have options for the umlaut etc- but nothing major.

I got a Lenovo g500s with an i5-3230 from amazon.de just last week.
The keyboard is practically the same, no problems with it.
Linux Mint is working quite well so far, and was very easy to install.

I initially paid to have it sent via post, but it got delayed so I emailed them (in English), and they sent me out another one, and actually sent it to me with UPS, which was good of them.

They were very helpful, and, as you might expect, efficient, with better written English than me..
I'd say pay the extra 20e or so to get it sent express as it's probably safer than just through the post...
which would work out at about 450e for an i5.

If you dont mind buying from Amazon, heres an 4th gen Haswell i5 for around €450.

Looks quite nice aswel I think.

Also stick an 256GB SSD in this for around €100 extra (or an 120GB for around €75) and you have a very fast well priced laptop.
