I have looked in the FAQs section on insurance and cannot see my problem so I am going to ask here see if ANYBODY can help me.

A couple of days ago i was on my travels with herself and the little one, everything was fine until i got to a corner on a country road and some Nobhead decided to overtake the car in front of him on the same corner, i just noticed him and swerved to the left narrowly avoiding said Nobhead and ending up in the ditch.

Slightly shaken and possibly in a bit of shock I try to pull of but my steering is all wonkey now.
It is pulling to left like the tracking being gone and when i try to straighten it up it feels like there is a motor not running properly in the background of the steering wheel.

Luckily my neighbor is a mechanic and he reckons the steering column is gone and he has sourced one for me for €350 he will do it all for €400.

    Is this a good price?

So what im asking is does anyone know if the insurance will pay this for me as i cant actually afford this at the moment and i really need the car.

My head is wrecked in this day and age someone overtaken on a corner is ridiculous AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

I assume the other driver didn't stop.

    That would be correct

Your own insurance would go up in that case if you claimed.

I do know that but unfortunately that is a cross i have to bear, if i had the money for it I would not even be asking this question

I really think you'd be better off borrowing the money or something. You'll possibly pay multiples of the €400 in higher premiums

How much is your policy excess? Probably €250 or more at least, so if it can be fixed for €400 it really is not worth claiming for this.

Keep in mind that you probably have an excess of €2-400 on your policy too.

    It's a no-win. You'll end up paying either way.

For the sake of the saving of claiming you really are better off.

Do you even know if your excess is less than the mechanics quote? If it's not then insurance will pay nothing and you'll still have the claim on your policy.

My excess e.g. is €500 per claim

    Was there any witness's??
    besides yourself?

I would check out the MIBI, it will take time but it is possible to claim for accidents where an unidentified car was at fault. it used to take average of 9months to get claims sorted a few years ago...
    could be worth a shot

The only witnesses were myself herself the Nobhead and the other driver neither of which stopped.

Forgive my ignorance but what is MIBI

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland was established in 1955 by an Agreement between the Government and the Companies underwriting motor insurance in Ireland for the purpose of compensating victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles.

Thanks for that but could you consider what happened to me to be a "Road traffic accident"

Im not sure that MIBI are going to be of much use. The other car was not directly involved in the incident (ie they didnt come into contact with the OP), and proving that they were a factor will be next to impossible.

That's a fair point. Tricky situation he's in.

OP - check the small print of your insurance policy. It is possible that you are already paying for No Claims Bonus protection, without realizing it. If you are, you can make a claim, and your No Claims Bonus is not affected. I think the excess stipulation still applies though.

His NCB may be protected, but his premium would still go up. The ncb is just knocked off the total premium. Total premium would be higher after a claim. It's a false saving when the excess is considered, even if the excess was only €100.
