During the Visit of Pope Francis to Israel, he was supposed to eat at the Notre Dame centre that is administered by the Legionaries of Christ. The meal was planned for in the Wine and Cheese restaurant on the top floor of the Hotel. In attendance were some benefactors of the centre.

The Pope decided for something less opulent and went to eat with the Franciscans.

Proper order, given the extremely dodgy record of the Legionaries of Christ. The emphasis Pope Francis has put on simplicity is a breath of fresh air.

The website for the Notre Dame Centre makes it look like a 5 star hotel. Quite what Jesus would think, I don't know.

Quite typical of your bias. Many thousands of legionaries of Christ have an excellent record and given great Christian service, Marcial Maciel is one of the few ones that did not.

Hmmm.. There are 30 Legionaries under investigation. Not to mention Fr. Thomas Williams who was professor of Moral Theology while he had his affairs.. And the Legion know about it, even when he had a child.

Also there are not many thousands of Legionaries, The numbers have fallen as many have left.

They had their General Chapter this year and the Pope did not meet with the Chapter, he has also not approved their constitutions.

Maciel just so happened to be the founder and was largely responsible for the culture within the organisation. Why did Pope Benedict initiate an apostolic visitation? Was he biased too?

Anyway, delighted to see that Pope Francis spent time with the Franciscans, an order founded by a true saint.

The Rooms are simply enough, not 5 star. (no TV in some) There is a restaurant on the ground floor with a buffet where you can eat all you want for 15 euros.

But the terrance restaurant is pretty expensive.

Over the years there have been , and you want to judge them and all the work they have done by the actions of 30 under investigation then that's a poor judgement indeed. And an investigation does not make someone guilty. A person is entitled to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, that's a the foundation of any legal justice system.

Fair enough, top marks for the presentation I must say!

Why after the apostolic visitation were they allowed to continue their work ?

Well my Brother was a Priest with them for 20 years.. He left pretty badly and has been treated badly by them. I think I know a little bit about them from the inside. Pope Benedict was pretty shocked when he saw the cult like methods used by the legion. I think I am an authoritative spokesman fort he topic.

I love the Catholic Church, but the Legionaries.. well the jury is out. yes there are many good men, but they don't have an approved constitution, and hundreds are leaving.

And yet you blacken all their members and ex members instead of differentiating between them, including those not even proven guilty of anything yet.

Sorry to hear about your brother. There seems to have been a lot of people involves with the Legion who were truly scarred by the experience. Of course, plenty of people leave other religious orders too, but they usually maintain a good deal of affection for their former order. Just doesn't seem to be the case with the LoC.

Once you are gone, your gone. Its like the hitchcock movie I saw once that people who were punished had a sign placed on their forehead and everyone ignored them and pretended they did not exist. Well that is what it was like for those some who left the Legion. Pretty pathetic order to be honest. Their lack of basic Christian Charity. I know things have changed and there are some Legionaries who are honest and will try and help, but a lot of the old structures were left behind and they elected a Mexican. It was a semi-cult/sect.

For example my Brother told me about a Spanish Priest from a nobel family, The Legionary priest saw Fr. Maciel one day with his mistress. He confronted the founder, the founder managed to convince other priests that the Priest was insane. He then managed to get the priest committed for mental treatment.. Can you imagine having your sanity taken away. And so on.. The Spanish priest had 3 brothers in the Legion and his sister was head of the Regnum Christ lay movement. They all left.

The mental abuse was the worst.
