    heya,

    following question.
im not too sure how this works so:
was ringing to ask insurance if i can drive other peoples car (for example on a night out and im the driver but its the buddy's car).
so im covered by my insurance.
i also asked if i can drive a car which is not insured by the person who owns it. insurance said i can still drive it because i am covered in the case of the case.
but the guards still have the right to take the car because my buddy didnt insure it even tho i drive it when i get checked.

so...i always thought its the person insured who then covers the car being driven. so when i am covered, why can the guards still take the car if i am driving as i am covered?

that makes no sense in my head, can someone enlighten me?

That isn't the case here but it is in the UK where a car must be either insured and taxed or declared off the road. Where you may have a problem is having no disc displayed...you would want to have al you documents with you

yeah that makes sense, its just the fact they can still take it even tho im (the covered one) is driving....
of course with valid tax and nct on

While you may be covered to drive it, it may still show up as not being insured if the Gardaí run a check on it, in which case they would seize it. The Gardaí would probably not have visibility to the extended cover on your policy when they run an insurance check on it. Probably would be sorted in the end but not before they seize it and check with your insurance company later.

That would be my take on what they mean.

I go along with what Bazz26 said, afaik if a Garda suspects the driver is uninsured he can seize on the spot and how would the Gardaí know you're insured? Showing your insurance certificate should convince him that you're covered.

that's why I said take your paperwork with you. I don't think the Gard's have automatic accesss through ANPR to an Insurance database (there in't one)...all ANPR does in Ireland is show if it's taxed afaik

If I ever drive a car on TPE, I bring my policy documents with me so I can show details of the extension to any curious Guards. Haven't had any hassle so far, despite a car initially looking 'uninsured'.

What car does your "buddy" own that's not insured?

Haha my buddy (who is one of my buddies) was only an example as I will drive different cars from friends every now and then.
Another one just got a new one, so i might take it for a spin, the buddy when we are out drinking, owns an almeara
