Growing out hair dye

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with totally growing out their dyed hair and going back to their natural colour?

My hair is naturally a light-medium brown, and I've been dying it every colour under the sun for the last 11 years. Right now, it's a rich dark brown with reddish ends, but using different dyes has left it uneven and patchy. I'm stuck in a rut and want to get back to basics, so to speak. There isn't much I can do with it except keep going down the dark brown path, or have it lightened in a salon, which is a little expensive for me right now.

My hair is shoulder length, and I'm wondering how long I'll be left with weird, two-tone hair. I know everyone's hair grows at different rates but a loose time frame would be nice. Also, will it look really terrible? Like a crappy reverse-ombre?

I hope someone can help me! :)

I had my hair dyed loads of colours like yourself but mine is naturally dark brown. I had bleached it so it was blonde for ages when i got fed up with blond. i dyed over dark brown, but my hair was in such bad condition from the bleach. To be honest theres not that much to do to get it grow faster, i just kept trimming it literally every second week by half an inch myself, and used various hair masks to get it in better condition, it took about 2 years to fully grow it out as my hair was around shoulder length. I have heard that Apelcin shampoo is good for hair growth and some lee stafford products.

I've just finished growing out dye that had left my hair destroyed, it's taken about 2 years. I have still been dying my hair (red) but using semi permanent only, every 3-4 weeks. Last haircut I finally lost the ends of what had permanent dye. The semi permanent I've been using is great because it fades evenly, so I haven't ended up with the ends of my hair several shades darker than the rest over time. Of course you can't have the same vibrancy of red hair with semi, but the colour now is actually close to my natural colour so I'm happy with it.

Thanks for the advice guys! By the sounds of it, two years is the standard for growing out dye for shoulder length hair.

I've been thinking of seeing what a hairdresser can do to lighten it up a bit so there isn't as much of a contrast between the dyed and natural hair as it grows, and lashing in the treatments to stop it all being frazzled. A few trims along the way will hopefully help things too.

My hair is pretty healthy as it is, so the lightening *shouldn't* wreck it too much if I look after it.
