07 Audi A3 belt or chain?

Hi All,

I have an Audi A3 1.6 petrol. Has that got a timing belt or timing chain?

Belt if it's the 1.6 8 valve which the majority are.

The FSI has a chain I believe.

As Muppetcheck says the 1.6 FSI has a chain, the ordinary 1.6 8v uses a timing belt.

If you don't know which engine your car has and can't find the engine code then the easiest way to tell (assuming your car has a manual gearbox) is if it is 5 speed it is the ordinary 1.6 and if it is 6 speed it is the FSI.

If it is the 1.6 8v with the belt then the good news is that they are about the cheapest car out there to have the timing belt job done on. You should be able to get the timing belt kit and water pump replaced for around €260 including parts and labour.

On a related note does anyone know the change interval for that timing belt on the 1.6 A3 8 valve?

BSE is the 8v engine so has a belt.

The interval is a strange one on them. Every 4 years regardless of mileage.
