180,000km or 5 years, whichever comes first.

    thanks for that....

I meant to say it has 117,000 miles...... approx 188,000 km clocked up so far

its way overdue, as long as it doesn't pop coming down from the north... :(

    any idea on cost?

From 2010 onwards VW actually increased the interval to 240,000km so you should be safe enough. I'd still get it done ASAP though.

Some VW dealers are doing them for €349 including the water pump at the moment.

No independent will be able to match that. We need to charge €400 to make it worth our while. As a result we don't change very many :pac:

    Bit of a set back,

the last service was stamped at 129,000km (80,000 miles) which I verified with the VW dealer up north but nothing since,

it now has 188,000km (117,000 miles)...... big gap there!!! :(

I dont know much about these new type 2.0 CR engines but its probably a big gamble??

They seem to tolerate neglect pretty well to be honest!

But given how common diesel Passats are why would you bother buying one that had big mileage on it, no timing belt done and question marks over service history?

just off the phone with the guy I was dealing with, he sells cars from home.... not a main dealer or anything,

he bought the car without the service book and had to get a new one from Agnew's the VW dealer in Belfast where they wrote out & stamped all the work they had done into the new book, but thats where it ends,

the work could have been done by anyone after that, if at all, but I have no way of knowing,

one thing he did say was that the dash says its due another service in 1500 miles and that only a garage could re-set the mileage until the next service which to him means it had to have been serviced!!

I'm starting to get cold feet.....

EDIT: its a highline model with all the bells & whistles but he did say that is selling it cheap because of all this, €7000 and €3,300 for me to clear it!

Trust your instincts, your man is spouting some BS to you, i don't know many guys selling cars from home with a direct line to Agnews service department that don't mind selling cars cheap and will tell you a blatant lie like only a garage can reset the service reminder.

I just rang Agnews with the reg and they called out all the servicing that was done from new to 78,000 miles......... its the independent work after that now that I cant prove,

    pity...... think I'll keep looking,

Recent service history is more important anyway. As George said there's a fair choice of Passats out there so you shouldn't have to settle for any old one.

For future reference, anyone with VAG specific diagnostics can reset the service indicator on these cars. It used to be the case that you could use a specific sequence of button presses on the dash to do it too, but I'm not sure if that's still possible. It's a legal requirement (from the EU) that servicing work is accessible to independent garages, and that has to include diagnostic related procedures.
