Vectrex - HELP!

    Hi folks,

My beloved Vectrex has given up the ghost on me. Turned it on yesterday evening and the system is powering up, but I'm getting no sound or picture.

Is there any magician among us who might be able to bring it back to life?

    Many thanks,

    RNB

    Oh no, not again!
I think everyone who bought one had lost theirs through something like this, though mine still works... touch wood.
Myrddin might be able to help, assuming it's a toasted capacitor or something.
When you turn it on is there any noise to suggest it's working though the screen is not?

Sorry, should have mentioned - when it powers up, there is slight crackling and it definitely appears to be attempting to do something, but the screen remains blank

    Sh1te.
I hope it's just a component and not the screen.
    Best of luck man.

    Crackling could be the lopt.

One of my Vectrex's has an issue in that sometimes when you power it up the screen doesn't come on but you can hear it humming a bit. Powering it off and on seems to fix it for me.
In my case it's probably a cap issue and just needs a cap kit done on it.

Yep the lopt or flyback transformer.(same thing)
If you can take the case off and plug it in you might see blue fire coming out of the lopt.If you do its shot and need replacing.
    It'll make a crackling/hissing noise too.
It'll look like this with the red wire going to the tube.

I'd do your resarch tho before trying to remove it as you can get a good dart of them even when unpluged.

Anyone among us willing and capable to give this a fix for me? Obviously, I'll happily throw money at you to bring it back to life for me... :D

There'd be game sounds if it was the flyback though wouldn't there?

So maybe it's something earlier in the circuit. Hopefully anyway, I'd say a flyback for a veccy would be a bitch to find.

Dont know Ive never even seen a veccy in real life!
Did someone here not do a cap/lopt on one here a few weeks back?

I was doing a bit of research on vector monitors for that asteroids and Bob Roberts seems to be the only place for parts.
Pain in the swiss ordering off him tho from outside the states

Well just from a standard troubleshooting point of view.

Flyback powers the monitor so causes monitor issues, but it shouldn't generate issues with the sound hardware (if it was an arcade cab it would be playing blind for example)

That's me making lots of assumptions about the veccy though :D

    You can get a cap kit for a veccy from that console5 chap;

    http://console5.com/store/vectrex-cap-kit.html

Myrddin installed one on mine when it went bad, didn't solve it though unfortunately :(

I don't really have the time these days to be doing modding/repairs, & only do the odd job. Troubleshooting a Veccie isn't for me right now dude, perhaps give The Last Bandit a bell :)

He'll give it back to you, but it'll also be Jamma compatible, and work with an array of controllers..... The Last Bandit is like the local McGuyver

Well I've still not fixed my own one so that can't be a good sign :)
And I'm in Canada at the moment so not up to fixing much these days...
