Have seen loads of people with standard road bikes with bolt on tt bars added. I would have thought the whole setup is different so it there any benefit to this?

Massive difference in a tt. If you are riding in a bunch it is frowned apon. But as regarding a solo effort it is the best bang for buck change you can make to the bike.

I have a pair not sure about speed difference, although bike split in Athy was faster this year with them on.

I find them more comfortable if nothing else.
