Road bike for Girlfriend

    Hey Guys,

Helping my girlfriend get sorted with her first road bike. She is very much a starter so not looking to spend serious money - aiming for circa 750 euro.

Been looking at some of the mainstream brands and there doesn't seem to many available that use decent components - Shimano Sora for example.

As such, more than happy to go with a non-mainstream brand but where it gets difficult is that 500euro of the cost will be paid for using a One4all voucher.

I will obviously take her in to get sized to confirm but aiming for either a M or L sized bike (she is 5'10).

    Cheers in advance.

I have a Scott Speedster 20 so she has her eye on a Scot as well. I was looking at he 40/50 Speedster and 35/45 Contessa ranges. Seem to solve the problem as a few shows in town take the vouchers.

Have you had a look at some of the Giant Avail? If you could stretch a little bit.

    http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/2013.liv.giant.avail.3/11866/56906/

There is always a few places that might still have last years model in as well, so a deal could be done.

You're restricting your search just looking at womens bikes especially as she's no smaller height wise than a lot of men - both my wifes are normal road bikes and she's happy with them.

Be aware that those Scotts you mention (apart from your own) are triples, which are no fun.
Manufacturers seem to make a lot of the cheaper wsd bikes triples, drives me mad.
As you go up in price you start to have a few compact options, but then they stick on a Claris groupset (the new Trek wsd bikes).
I was in a shop yesterday which was selling a Specialized wsd compact for £1400, it had a Sora groupset!
Like someone mentioned, if she's 5ft10 she'd be fine with a non wsd bike.

Halfords sometimes have older/surplus/I dont know why offers on women-specfic Boardmans, so it might be worth popping down to your local branch. They will have stuff thats not on their website, although maybe not in your local branch - ask them to check others.

They have the Boardman Road Sport Fi Bike 2014 at €600 at the moment - or for €100 less the new (Victoria) Pendleton brand - and although both have the Claris 8 speed group (the new name for the 2300 group, I think?) thats a fairly good price - and you dont have to try too hard to obtain a 10% discount voucher for Halfords ;)

Cheers for all the replies! More than happy to go with a guys bike for her - assume the saddle will just need changing?

Oh yeah, keep seeing Tektro brakes on the cheaper bikes recently. Are they any use?

If she's on boards, that is velvety smooooooth. If not, you need to HTFU. :)
