Clutch gone?

Hi all - driving home from the shops earlier and the car just wouldn't go from 2nd into 3rd. There were no funny noises or anything out of the ordinary prior to that. Pulled in to see what was up, and it seems to be that the clutch isn't engaging so I can't get the car into any gear. When the engine is switched off, the clutch seems to depress ok although it does seem slightly heavier than it did before.

I managed to get the car into 1st gear with the engine switched off - it lunged forward a bit when I started it up, but it got me home.

Car is an 07 Skoda Octavia 1.4 petrol.

Any ideas what might be up?

Try pumping the pedal a few times while car is running and then see if it will go into gear.

You will be able to drive home without using clutch start in 1st and time gear changes with engine as in off the gas.

This just to get home and not for long distance.

Sounds like it alright, was it slipping before that?

No, hadn't noticed anything untoward at all

Thanks - tried that but still the same

Just noticed as well when I was doing that there is a bit of vibration when the clutch is in

Thanks punisher, managed to get it home. Thankfully I wasn't too far away from the house so it wasn't too painful

Check the oil level in the master cylinder. Try topping up with brake/clutch fluid (whatever's appropriate) and pump the pedal a few times and see if anything changes. With any luck it's part of the master cylinder leaking and you won't need to go at the transmission.

Thanks- I hope it is something as simple as that. Unfortunately I am not one bit mechanically minded so it is going to have to go into the garage. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed it isn't anything massively costly. Trouble is, I am at their mercy.....
