College graduate benefit entitlements

    Hi,

I've just finished up my degree in the last week. I'm just wondering if I am entitled to any state benefits. I've been looking for jobs the past couple of months in the hope of finding something but to no avail. I've been living off my savings since the start of the year when I finished up my internship, and unfortunately the funds have no run dry!!

Would I be entitled to anything? Would it be worth my while making an appointment with the relieving officer?

    Thanks in advance.

Go to your local sw office and apply for jobseekers. You will need ID, proof of address and a letter from college stating you are finished. You will have to fill out some forms and if its jobseekers allowance you will be means tested and if you are < 25 years of age and living at home your parents earnings will be assessed.

I appreciate the reply. I just had a look on citizens information and it appears I'll be entitled to some payment according to the conditions listed on there, and i'm <25.

Does it usually take long to process the application?

Would I be able to apply for a supplementary payment while waiting on the application to be processed?

Yes you can apply for swa while your jsa is being processed. Time scale for processing of jsa all depends on the workload in the office. If your parents are self employed then it will take longer as it will have to go to a social welfare inspector.

You can also apply to your local Community Welfare Officer for a weekly payment while you are waiting for your Jobseekers allowance, I am not too sure if the JA is backdated or not.

I called to my local office this morning. Got an appointment for next Tuesday to meet and discuss my application for JA. I have to go back tomorrow morning and meet with the community welfare officer and see if I'm entitled to anything in the meantime.

    Cheers for the replys
