Windscreen Seal

The rubber seal won't actually seal the glass in place, its bonded in with a special type of sealant.
Don't use the silicone, it will look crap and not serve any purpose.
I would contact an independent windcreen outfit and see if they will cut a new length of rubber for you, chances are that the old stuff is just hardened.

What car? All modern cars have bonded windscreens, the rubber seal keeps the dirt out

Thanks all - The car is a 2005 Focus.
