It gets flagged up on change of ownership I believe. Just wait the 12 months.
In my opinion, it falls into the same category as selling a car knowing there's finance on it. You will be scamming a potential buyer as they may it may not will become liable for the VRT?

VRT clawback. Doesn't matter if it's already registered or not.

Yea. Your are attempting to scam somebody in full knowledge that you can't do it. They would have legal grounds to persue you.

VRT is a tax on the registration of the vehicle, this occurs (and only occurs) when the vehicle first enters the state. This registration has already occurred. (the new owner will not need to register the car). The OP wouldn't be scamming anyone, the new owner would not be liable to pay any VRT that could become due. However, the OP who originally imported it, could become liable.

When the exemption for VRT was claimed, the OP would have signed forms or completed paperwork agreeing not sell the car for a certain period of time. The revenue will have granted the exemption from VRT based on the assumption of truth of this information. If the OP then goes on to sell the car within the time period that they agreed not to sell the car, they are exposing themselves to the VRT liability (and potentially an allegation of fraud).

OP, its entirely your call, but I wouldn't chance going under the radar, as if you are found out, I would think the Revenue may go after you for the full amount.

If you contact the revenue in advance, and explain to a human (try an get face to face or at least on the phone) the reason that you need to sell the car, they may be able to waive the VRT or work out a reduced amount based on the length of time the car has been in the state.

Revenue is one of the most efficient of our public services so you should get to talk to somebody. Anytime I ring them I get through, you may be waiting a few minutes though but I think they tell you on the phone that you are X mins away from an answer.

    Best of luck anyhow.

No need for that. All my tax refunds in the past few years were processed in less than a week. I call it efficient.

Their voice recognition system isn't as "efficient" , but online processing is excellent.

You both have been very lucky it seems...

I have been treated extremely poorly by the revenue in regard to my exemption from the requirement to register my vehicle in the state. I currently have complaint against them. I wont say anything more until it has been resolved, but one of the issues that was prevalent in every contact I had, was a lack of efficiency. (response time frames were completely ignored)

My experiences of Revenue have generally always been positive. Got some tax back off them at the end of last year; I had the cheques sent out to me about ten days after I sent in the forms.
