NCT Notification (or lack of!)

    Hey all,

a friend has a 2010 car and she assumed that she'd be notified in writing as to when her first NCT was due in 2014.... as of now she received no letter so decided to book online to get test to coincide with her service due. Turns out it said online that her NCT was due 3 months ago... if she books a test now will she be okay? Shouldn't she have received notification from the NCT of this anyhow,

    thanks in advance!

NCT doesn't notify any more, that stopped a while back.
She can still get a test no problem, just ring/book online.

They stopped sending out notifications some time back but it is the registered owner's responsibility to know when their car's NCT is due.

It's astonishing the amount of babying most Irish motorists require to fulfil their requirements to be road legal.

Ah that's a bit extreme to say, the system is made confusing because they do send a letter for the first NCT due in your ownership of a second hand car (maybe subsequent ones too? I can't remember ). Why don't they do it for new cars too

Can it be any calendar? What if he doesn't use 'Google Calendar'? Will it only work with 'Google Calendar'?

I sure he was just using google as an example. You can write it on your kitchen wall with a permanent sharpey marker for all anybody cares. And no, it doesn't have to be a "sharpey".

People need to cop on and stop expecting the hands held for everything. I didn't get a tax reminder boo hoo it's on your windscreen ffs (another constant moan from Irish motorists)

I have experience of a different situation that I think warranted some contact from them.

Recently I was looking to book my 1st NCT, but the nearest appt was about 2 months away, so I called their central number and spoke to a girl who said she would put me on a list for the next cancellation at my local centre. She took my email and mobile number and said I would hear from them if something became free.

A couple of weeks passed and heard nothing, then I was checking online, but the system said I already had a booking on the reg I entered. I continued on and found out that my NCT was booked for about 5 days away!

I was happy to get one so quickly, but I could have missed it so easily, as I just assumed they would contact me.

I guess I can understand expecting a notification for your first NCT. Its not written on the windscreen and if you bought the car second hand then you might not be aware of when the NCT is due (as in what date/month).

For all other tests though it really is up to the person to keep an eye on their disc and sort it out when it needs sorting.

For what it's worth, my 2010 car was due for NCT for the first time last month, and I was sent a letter to notify me of this in April.

better still set it for two months considering the backlog even though they pretty much know how much capacity is needed to be done from from tax , insurance and no show and re-test rates.

Or 3 months, considering you can book a test 3 months before expiry.

I got a reminder letter in the post for my NCT this year, my car is now in the yearly system as it is over 10 years old.

I also noticed that the tax renewal says when the NCT is due which is nice, is this a new thing?

Welcome to the forum! It is not best practice to ask questions which are as off topic as yours in someones thread, it can get messy dealing with two topics but I see you made a normal thread so no bother.

6 months if it's the first test. I booked my father's previous Scirocco in for the earliest day I could, and it ended up with a 30 month NCT.

I got a letter yesterday from NCT.

It says, in effect, "you are the registered owner of a car, it needs an NCT" The car number and my name are on the letter, but no expiry date for my current NCT.

Why bother using their database to send the letter and not indicate the date before which you must be tested??

There are three paragraphs of guff about "there is no advantage in delaying your NCT" etc. There is a warning about penalty points.

Unlike the criticisms in this thread I don't expect to be spoonfed, but they could save themselves a lot of trouble by offering a date/time in your nearest centre and letting you phone in to change it.... no?

I assume I got "reminded" if that is what the letter was, because I have passed the 10 year mark. Their computer system can calculate.... but not tell you the expiry date, what a waste.

Ho-hum, typical of the slap happy methodology of public sector services (sub-contracted to the private sector).

You can get the NCT due date for any car using this - https://ncts.ie/booking_app/Bookings/ncTReminder.aspx?language=english

Thanks for that, as was mentioned earlier I can also get it by looking at the disk on my windscreen, but that wasn't my point, which was, why bother writing to me saying I need an NCT (or will soon!!), why not offer me a slot??

People forget things all the time, motoring stuff is no different. I don't see why people shouldn't be reminded of tax, insurance and nct as they are all important things and people (especially those with little of no interest in cars apart from getting from A to B) just have no thought at all for these things.

There should be a text or email at the very least to remind people of the nct, they are charging enough to be sending a letter too imo. If they make something compulsory then they really need to be reminding people.

If they offered a slot then they'd have to reserve that slot for you until such time as you confirm you accept or decline. Even putting a deadline would tie the slot up until that deadline passed. The slot they offer might (read "almost certainly") won't suit most people so there's a good chance you'll be back on that phone looking to reschedule - but wait, there are even less free slots to book because many of the potential slots are already on hold because their deadlines haven't passed or their 'owners' haven't declined yet. Multiply that by the volume of cars due at any one time and imagine the chaos would be even worse. Much better to let people take responsibility for their own bookings.

The alternative would be to allocate mandatory dates, turn up or pay a fine kinda thing unless you can prove a justifiable reason for not being there (sick, abroad, etc)

They are writing to you to remind you it is due, it is up to you as the registered owner to book it. Your kind of contradicting your earlier post there when you say you don't need to spoon fed. What happens if their data is out of date, you recently move house or sell the car, etc? So they send the reminder to your old address with an appointment, you don't turn up because you never got it or you no longer own the car. They then end up with empty slots and the system becomes worse than it is now.

It's like getting a yearly physical or dental check, your doctor/dentist can send you a reminder it's due but it's up to you to book an appointment.

OK, sort of logical, but I still wonder why they don't make better use of the "reminder" Especially because I did go through the routine, having looked at the disk, saw the out date was 3 July and the earliest date offered in my local centre was SEPTEMBER 22, but the first time I could use (I live on an island and need to get a boat to the centre, car is on the mainland) was on 29 September! With that sort of backlog I'd say they need to sort out something.....

They say in the letter there is no advantage in delaying, yep, sure, they'll arrange the delay....

BTW, I assume I'm ok if roadside checked, seeing as how the cert will run out in three weeks but the test is three month away....?? I also assume the effective date of the cert will be backdated??

As I said, ho-hum, so much for the efficiency of privatisation.... I also discovered today you cannot get a new driving license more than three months ahead. I'll be away then, so I tried to get one.... no, no, you'll have to make an appointment and explain when you'll be available for the interview, photo, etc., and if you need one, your medical cert has to be less than one month old. Again, ho-hum, what is preventing them getting your money early??

Because your girlfriends birth date / wedding anniversary date / etc is not stuck on your windscreen less than 6 feet from your face every time you drive the car. In theory you can be reminded of your expiry dates for all of these things every day if you just take 10 seconds to look in your own windscreen.
