04 nissan almera dipped head lights ...

I presume this is the model with projector headlights on dims (four round lights visible through clear plastic at the front). Like this:

The problem is that there is very little space and ventilation around the bulbs in the dip beams. The build up of heat blackens the reflective surface at the back of the light so light is absorbed rather than projected. There is no cure, you have to buy new lights. Mick's Garage is offering them for about €60 each, see here:

Update: The mechanic has changed the spark plugs, the car was starting and he drove it around the place, then the next day i was driving and the engine just cut off mid drive. Wouldn't start up then..next morning he started it.

It's weird the car feels like its running great, he did a test on the engine and everything was fine, he's saying it might be an issue with the fuel pipe now.

    Hate cars :)

I'd say mirror reflectors in headlamps are gone. One day I tried to fit even xenon kit to improve the brightness, but no luck.
It is cheaper to buy new lamps e.g Somora catalogue.

You can't see the reflectors of the dipped beam because they are projector lights with a thick glass lens at the front, so that part of your post does not make sense.

No, there is no bulb that will make a difference. You already have the correct advice in this thread.

Almera headlights are almost a service item to be changed every three to four years. No bulb can fix it, change the lights is the cure

Moved out from an old thread.

To go with everyone else, a few years is about right for bulbs before they go. It's a consumable like many other things on the car.

Some bulbs will appear brighter than others, Nightbreakers are good imo.

Aye, but on Almeras you nearly need to change the headlight units more than the bulbs

Sorry i am not a mechanic 'but i say reflectors i mean the chrome surround this seems normal 'the reason i asked is i thought buying replacement lights would be no different' and i thought changing bulbs would solve the problem 'i have heard xenon bulbs might improve beam .By the way being in my 70s i have learned to be more tolerant of other peoples mistakes 'try it sometime'

Yes, reflectors are "chrome surrounds" but you are probably looking at the main beams. You cannot see the reflectors of the dipped beam because they are in the projector units. Changing bulbs will not make any difference if the reflectors are blackened (which they are). This has been said several times on the thread but if there is something you still don't understand please just ask rather than accusing others of intolerance.

Tony, if it's any use to you, in the headlights, there are three separate lights as part of the headlight unit. The outer one is the indicator, the middle one is the main beam with the traditional reflector and the inner one is the dim behind the weird "eye" thing (it's a projector light). The trouble is that the back of the projector/reflector in the projector (inner light) gets tarnished / blacked from the heat of the bulb.

No changing of bulbs will fix the problem as the parts that reflect and direct the light are dulled and not working at peak efficiency. The cure is to change the headlights (and no you can't get parts to repair, it's swap the whole light unit), and I'll be changing them again shortly for the second time (I change them every 3 to 4 years) in my own.
