Golf GTI MK5 engine noise issue/spluttering

    Any advice would be great.....

My Mk5 Gti Golf is sitting about 500 revs on the rev clock, is this normal?

After driving the car for 20-30 minutes it sometimes (8/10 times) splutters/hiccups lightly but the needle of the rev counter doesn't move. You mainly notice it when your feet are in contact with the pedals but sometimes it is noticeably loud. I think their was a Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor as their was an error EVAP Emission Control system incorrect (PO441) about 12 months ago but the mechanic resolved this problem. Could this be a similar problem? Any suggestions?

A mechanic has said to me that the head may need to be skimmed? Could this be a misdiagnosis?

Can anyone advise a VW specialist?

Is there a loss of power. Previously experienced "hiccups" in the older 1.8t due to a loose pipe going into the turbo.

George Dalton is a VW specialist, he is on here or at www.Dalton's.ie

    Where are you based?

P0441 is often the Charcoal Canister. When you open the bonnet on the left side in front of the washer bottle is a black box with 2 pipes going in. Check the 2 pipes are connected, and they're in good order. Follow them all the way and make sure they're not leaking or sucking air along the way.

You check the MAF by just unplugging it. If the ideal smooths after the MAF is unplugged, then it's definitely the MAF. No mention of misfires on VCDS? Any idea if the PCV or Diverter Valve were replaced?

Not exactly a budding mechanic so won't be able to do half that stuff! Will check the pipes from the charcoal canister. Any recommendations on were to get a reliable answer that won't cost an fortune? A local mechanic said the head needed to be skimmed but very apprehensive about this advice.

This is what the canister looks like, and an example of broken pipe:

It's not the pipe going into the canister. I'm based in Dublin 15

My VRs was doing same before 1 of the coils failed changed 2 and will do other 2 soon and back to running great.

Would I not be getting a fault code/engine management light if it was the coil?

Issue only seems to occur after 20-30 mins driving

There was no error or readings until coil failed completely then lights flashing on dash and running on 3cylinders.

The car had been a bit jumpy on / off for a while then bang gone.
