Reserving a registration number - for a non new import

So I'm on the verge of buying an import from the UK, and it's an 2009 car, I would like to get a particular number eg. 09 D 159 (this number is available as the first 200 numbers were always kept back by revenue). I know previously you could reserve a number for previous years but now with the new import registration prefix numbers eg 09D124*** etc I'm not so sure...have the rules changed?

So a two pronged query; I wonder can I still reserve one of the first 200 numbers for previous years (ie. 2009 and not new 2014....as revenue website states; "Applications will only be accepted from 1 November of the preceding year. Numbers can only be used in the
    relevant calendar year.")?

And then secondly can an import get one of these numbers and thus bypass the import prefixes (revenue would be getting €1,000 in the process....)?

    Thanks in advance :)

AFAIK this is only available for new vehicles/first registrations.

Personally, I think it should be open to any driver willing to pay the fee.
(A quick call or email to Revenue should clarify things for you).

Let us know how you get on!:)
