AFAIK you don't own them. They belong to BOC.

That was propane cylinders afaik ???

High pressure cylinders have been around for a 100 years and legends of their destructive potential have been around for 99

Gas bottles are lethal. Take care!

What has a propane explosion got to do with me getting a bottle filled with a non flammable gas by boc?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,921 ✭✭✭onyerbikepat

Flammable or non-flammable, they are all lethal. It's the 200 Bar pressure that's the dangerous bit. I work occasionly with Gas Bottles, Methane, Oxygen, Hydrogen even Nitrogen is deadly.

I work daily with them too as i am a welder so i'm well used to using oxygen and acetelyne and argon, argoshield light and propane i know the dangers but i just want an empty bottle if i can get another so i can get it filled through work on our work account as it cost about €400 for your first fill if i set up my own account so i don't see why this is been turned into a thread about explosions

How much is a refill of a the big bottle of gas do you know ?

About €60-70 + vat i think for a fill of argoshield light in the big z bottle, €120 a year rental and a €200 deposit which is refundable when you give the bottle back or after two years of having an account a fill for argon is about 90+vat i think for a small x size bottle and rent is about 90 a year

Thanks , the father asked me to get him a bottle last week , it the tall one out of the two that he uses for brazing and cutting . When I saw €400 I was like

OP, if you own the bottle will BOC fill it for you? The reason I ask is those bottles have to be periodically inspected, don't they?
Do they have a serial number?

Only BOC actually 'own' genuine BOC bottles, they are rented to individuals or companies.
They will only exchange/refill these bottles via a valid customer account.
The will not accept for exchange or refill any other bottle.

We all know that there are plenty of BOC bottles floating around out there in the hands of people who aren't BOC customers, but the bottles remain the property of BOC and they can and do seek to retrieve them.
Valid BOC account holders who facilitate others in getting bottles refilled run the risk of having their account cancelled or even pursued through the courts.

Again, we all know that this stuff is going on, but it's not without risk for the people concerned.

Anyhow another legit supply chain that might suit would be Hobbyweld, who have agents in a good few places in Ireland:

Because others aren't. The poor man this happened to also knew better and he still made an awful mistake.

Ya but from what i read about that he was emptying gas from one cylinder into another which is a dangerous practice and has nothing to do with what i want to do so i don't see the relevence here

You could use a co2 bottle from a pub and fill that from a large bottle at work. Depends on how much welding your doing. Used this method when doing tig welding on site easy loading van and moving about on site.
