Im looking to rent a car from Beauvais Airport in July with a Visa Debit through Avis. The website tells me they accept the cards but I cannot seem to get anymore info, when I rang Avis Ireland they told me ring France :-/ Anyways does anyone know how much of a hold that Avis will put on my debit card. Would like to know roughly in advance what will it be to factor it into the budget.......

Can't speak for Avis, but with Hertz it's usually the amount of the rental + €200. It varies and obviously depends on variables.

Avis confirmed to me today that they will accept the debit card and the hold on card will be cost of rental plus a tank of fuel and any optional extras such as gps if we take them.....

    .
.. Where cost of rental = full insurance taken out and/ or any possible excess on the insurance.
So suppose you don't go for complete insurance cover(if you're even let), you could get the debit card booked for well over a grand.

just wondering have you done the rental yet ? Looking to rent in Beauvais in September and it's hard to get a definitive answer on how much of a hold they put on the card?

Hi it was no problem with debit card....we rented citreon c3 deposit was €600 without extra insurance € 300 with extra which cost €12 per day....it reduces excess to zero. ..no hassle at all with avis and had a great holiday!

How the hell??? I just had my rental for friday cancelled, because they said there is no way to get the car with a debit card.
So 25 euros cancellation fee, and non refundable insurance= almost 100 euro into the skip :(

The car was rented thru ebookers, and rental company was Budget, wich apparently is the same company as Avis, they work together inland.
I spend half a day on the phone trying to sort it out with no luck. They all said the same: credit card, or no car, even tough I got the extra insurance, so in case i crush the car, or anything happens, I only pay exess.
Anyway, I had to cancel my rental.
Maybe I should chance it and just go with debit car, but I wanted to be sure, that I will have the car when I arrive.
I got it sorted anyway, family in France helped me out ( agreed to borrow me their own car ), but when I get there I'll ask them face to face what's the story, just to know for the future.
Of course I'll let Ya know

never knew budget and Avis are the same, but it indeed seems they are
"Avis Rent a Car System, LLC, better known as Avis, is an American car rental company headquartered in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey, United States.
Avis, Budget Rent a Car and Budget Truck Rental are all units of Avis Budget Group."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budget_Rent_a_Car

I got a car from Budget once and it was grand, but from hearing other folks it seems that it can not always be as straight forward.

Its BOI too...I was assured by avis that once the numbers were embossed on the card it would be fine and it was...I booked through avis.ie I rang them a couple of times to clarify also got clarification through their facebook page and in email which I duly printed and brought with me in case of any dispute in Beauvais...there was no mention of anything except the deposits and the zero excess insurance to lower lower deposit

Now that's strange. The only assurance I got was that they will not be able to collect the car from the airport...
Maybe they had a bad day so
Lucky You anyway. Next time I just chance it

Sorry, that I will not be able to collect the car...I meant

I just rang Europcar, first they said no, than they agreed
This is a strange world we live in...

Strange world is right...one guy I spoke to said the official line is that it must be credit card but they do take debit...seems a bit hush hush can't understand why

So I came back, and I had a great time.
    Few things I found out.
Official line about the credit card is because they have a bigger charge for operating debit cards.
Also turns out that I had to rent a car from Europcar, because of trouble with adding me to the cousins policy.
They took debit card no problem, deposit was 850 for Citroen DS3, but they didn't actually took it from the account, only kind of checked are they able to take that sum of money from the account...
My conclusion is to do the booking, with no extra policy, or anything, and go with whatever card U have, just chance it, and get extra insurance on place, when U are sure they accept Your card, just in case of any accident, that might be actually Your fault, and basic insurance won't cover it ( If U take the extra policy before, than if there is a problem with the card, and rental have to be cancelled, money paid for the insurance is non refundable )
So I know Europcar is ok from my experience, and as the2hurdys said, Avis is ok too.
    Good luck guys

I use Budget a lot in Thailand. They seem to run on a franchise basis there. Never had any issues but the CC is charged by a different company at every location.
