Best shoes for cycling and gym?

Anyone out there use their gym shoes to cycle in? Tbh I don't cycle enough to justify buying a pair of dedicated cycling shoes, but my current gym shoes tend to slip a lot on my pedals. So I want to get something that will offer me more grip but also something I can use straight in the gym/for running.

Get grippier pedals rather than grippier shoes, there are plenty available.

Just get a set of cages and straps, the are 20euro max perfect for what you need.

That's what I was thinking. Would you recommend any pedals in particular? It's a MTB and I plan on doing some DH stuff over the summer.

I had straps on these cage pedals but I took them off because frankly I hate straps. Just a psychological thing I guess, but I hate the idea of my toes being strapped onto the pedal, if in emergency I need to take my feet out it's awkward in the back of my mind. I know it's not really that awkward, but that's just how I feel so I never feel comfortable with them on.

Best value I'd go for DMR V8, but make sure you buy extra grease for them, when new they dont come with enough. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/dmr-v8-grease-port-flat-pedals/rp-prod3177.

For something a bit more bling I'd get the shimano MX80 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/shimano-saint-mx80-flat-pedals/rp-prod82557

I've used both of these, both are very grippy in all conditions.

I have a set of Wellgo pedals on my MTB, V8 or V12. I remember reading that they're made by the same folks that make DMR, but without the hefty price tag. My feet have never slipped off them. Bought them from CRC a number of years ago.

The main reason I'd go for the genuine V8's is the replaceable pins, the wellgos pins are fixed.

Didn't notice that. I still have all my pins after six years.

Thanks for that, will check them out.

n00b question, but what's the grease for?

The grease is for the bearings inside to keep the pedals rolling smoothly.

I've a set of V8's and they're still fine after 3 years, never had to replace the pins yet. They are cheap enough to replace if something ever does go wrong.

So the pins really add a lot of grip? I always thought those sort of pedals only grip well to cycle shoes. The pins look tiny! :P

No, I use them with normal runners and trail/hiking shoes and they work grand. There enough pins on both sides to provide grip.

The only bad side to then is that if you slip and hit a shin off the pedals they can leave a nasty cut.
