    Hola.

My name is Daniel, i'm going to start my postdegree studies in UCD this next september. I'm not sure if on-campus accommodation is better than off-campus accommodation. i think that the experience of living inside the campus can be great but can make it more difficult to enjoy the city itself maybe off-campus accommodation can have better aspects. Can someone give me some ideas?

    Thanks!

Hey, I take it you haven't been in UCD before then? What're you going to be studying?

I haven't lived on campus, but from what I hear from a lot of friends who do live on campus: 1) you can't really determine who you live with, and I'm not sure if they give preference to postgrad students living together, which means you could be lumped in with 1st years, and that mightn't be the kind of environment you want!

2)It's usually more expensive to live on campus, and if you're doing postgrad then you're more than likely going to be there for three semesters so its something to consider

3)Off campus doesn't necessarily mean you'll get to experience the city any more than living on campus, most people living off campus probably live a bit further out of town, but still the city is pretty accessible wherever you're living, once you're on a bus route!

If you've any more questions send me a private message.

I'm hoping to be doing some postgrad studies myself in UCD come september, and I'll be looking for off campus :)

    Hi there!

I'm Bryan. I'll be joining postgrad studies in this coming September too! I'll be on Msc of Computer Science. I am still bothering with the accommodation issues. I would put my resident selection in such order: Belgrove-Merville-Blackrock. Here I listed out few:

    1) Since I'm pursuing Computer Science, is Belgrove Resident nearby? How's the gender arrangement for each apartment?

    2) I would also like to do some part time jobs during the nights or weekends. Is the best to be in-campus or off-campus? Any suggestions on where could I possibly get the part time job that's high demand?

    Thanks!

    Hi Bryan!
    Second year UCD student here.
    1) Belgrove would be the closest UCD campus residences to the Computer Science center. But Merville wouldn't be too far from it, maybe less than a minute extra of a walk. You probably know yourself Blackrock is a good bit south of campus.
2)I can't help you with the part time jobs bit unfortunately but it really depends on the location of your part time job. Staying on campus or off campus shouldn't affect your job apart from the location.
For a postgrad I would probably recommend Blackrock as it is less strict and seems like more of a layed back place to stay in, but I've stayed in Merville and it's been fine for me, I was a first year and I was in with a second year and two third years. The age difference didn't have any effect, we all kept to ourselves and invited our own friends over whenever.
    Hope that helps!

Hey Y2JB, Thank you for the advise! It's noted :)

How about gender arrangement for Belgrove and Merville for an apartment? It that gonna be all same sex? I did prefer having own kitchen because I like to prepare my own meal. :D

Is part time job easy to find? Well, I've gotta research before I could decide with my agent. Anyway, millions of thanks for reply :)

    Hi Bryan,

As far as I know, apartments are mixed, but you'll of course have your own room. Some apartments might be single-sex, but I think it can go either way. If that'd be an issue, I'm sure the residence office could help you out.

The availability of part time jobs will really depend what area you would want to work in (pub work, restaurant, shop etc). There are various shops on campus, so you could try putting a CV in with them? Some postgraduate students also make extra money by offering grinds to undergraduate students. That could be worth looking into?

    Hope that helps! :)
