***Buyer Beware*** Clocked car

    Hi All,

So here's the story, myself and my friend buy and sell few cars every now and again. Two weeks ago my friend sold our 00 Lexus LS400 which was an donedeal (featured in Bangeromics thread on 8th of May). When he sold the car it had 185000 Miles on the clock, browsing donedeal yesterday and came across this:

    cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-lexus-nct-tested-2-15-mint-cond/6894938

Sorry can't add links as I don't have enough posts but there it is above.

Low and behold there is our old Lexus! On the add yesterday it said that the car had 80,000 miles on it, a far cry from the 185,000 it had on it in my possession.
My friend rang the seller and asked him what the mileage was and his response was that he didn't know the exact mileage but it was "definately under 100,000". When my friend explained that he sold it two weeks age and it was amazing how it suddenly lost 100k, the seller froze on the phone and said that it was just traded in and that he didn't know anything about it being clocked.

Now suddenly after the conversation, the mileage has gone up to 150,000 Kilometers. hmm.....

It makes me sick to see that someone has just shaved off the mileage like that especially because the timing belt was also due and after it being clocked would make the owner believe that it isn't!!!!

Everyone please beware of this car and don't get stung!!!!

P.S. here is the cached view of the original ad on which it was sold two weeks ago!!!

Might be an idea to ad the reg on thread so that anyone who searches for it they will find the real mileage.

Donedeal have just contacted me there to say that they have removed the ad and contacted the seller. Great to see a bit of justice!!!

Report it to the garda as it is a criminal offence. All the loopholes have been closed making it a criminal offence to tamper with the mileage.

For the garda its best to bring a printed copy of the advert as its difficult for them in local station to browse the web.

Which is why the OP needs to inform the Gardai, so that they can arrest the seller with the new clocking law.

Surely they can just say they bought it off some guy that bought it off the OP and don't have derails for them.

It's illegal to sell a clocked car regardless of who clocked it. The OP can provide proof that it's a 180k miles car so it can't be sold with less.

Hard to see how that will work in practice though. I'm aware of the new law but dubious as to how they'll actually prosecute anybody.

Its illegal to clock a car, and its illegal to sell a clocked car without informing the buyer that the mileage has been altered, but as it stands putting a car up on DD alone is not enough to constitute illegal activity afaik. The Gardai would have to prove that the seller was the one who clocked it, until such time that they sold it without informing the buyer of the altered mileage.

The law was changed in April, it's now illegal to sell a clocked car.

The OP sold a car with 180k miles. It was up for sale with 80k miles. The statue is clear altering or getting someone to alter the odometer is illegal. If the current seller didn't clock it then they will tell the Gardai who they bought it from, as if they are legit it's in their interest to report dodgy sellers. Not very hard for a prosecution then.

LS ad's still on Donedeal. That phone seems to have a lot of different lads using it, Sam wants to buy high mileage cars, Conor is lookin for spare caravan windows, Dean has a chihuahua for sale and Roy is selling an MG ZS.

All of them seem to have gone to the same school where they were mistaught how to spell "search" (serach?). Maybe John is just misreading the odo.:D

Unless the op has a receipt from the person they sold it to/traded it in to, how can they prove they sold it with 180k on it? The seller could say the op sold it to him with 80k on it.

The Op's original add could be some proof but not concrete.

Why bother clocking a €950 car anyway? Its worth pretty much the same regardless.

I think that for a prosecution to happen, the seller has no know that the car is clocked. That wasn't possible with the first ad, but it should be possible to prove it now with the second ad.

    Screenshots and then Gardai, OP.
