Looks like someone stole a friend's profile

Has anyone had this happen before..

I got a friend request on facebook from a former colleague. We are already friends on facebook so I assumed she lost her password. I accepted and in the new profile we had mutual friends (one or two other colleagues. It also had the same profile picture).

Anyway, a few minutes later the person starting chatting me and it became clear it wasn't my colleague. She asked in a very awkward way, as English wasn't their first language, how my family was. I know this person would not ask after my family. They might ask about colleagues but she did not know my family and it would not be her first question. Around 5 minutes later I blocked the person so they can no longer see my profile and sent my friend a message telling her what happened. She lives on the opposite side of the world so won't see it for a while.

I am now worried something similar could happen to me, as although I don't have many photos up in comparison to most, there are a few that other people have tagged me in. Is there anything I can do? What is the purpose of someone doing this?

It's a known scam. Report them to facebook and set your privacy to highest settings.

Check your friends list - can you see two of this particular friend? Assuming that your are already friends it seems that somebody may have cloned your friends profile - added all her pictures and then went down his/her friends list and sent friends requests.

If your friend had her account hacked then the hacker would not need to add you as a friend, they would already have direct access to you.

Nobody can see who is on my friends list so I suppose in this situation my account would be difficult to replicate because they wouldn't know who to add! I hope anyway!

Thanks. As I blocked them I can longer see the second profile and they cant see me or my friends list anymore. They had access to my profile for 10 or 15 mins but it looks like I'm ok. A few mutual friends were chatting to them for ages (they knew it wasn't our friend but played along) and it turns out they wanted us to click some link. I didn't get that far. They haven't had their profiles cloned either.
