Drivers seat adjustment mechanism not functioning properly is a valid failure so you can have no complaints there.
What kind of car is it?

    It's a vw bora

You could have a look yourself. Might be something simple caught in it.
Worst case, you could get a seat / mechanism from a breaker for small money and get it fitted.

When you pull up the handle to move the seat is there resistance? Or does the handle just swing freely?

It's probably a very easy fix in fairness, the slide mechanism on the bora is operated by a cable similar to that of a push bikes brakes.

Cabels broken or unhooked. Take a look, might be a 5 min job. Follow the line back from the Handel to check.

Oh I wouldn't have a clue lol, if I go to a garage how much would it be, don't wanna be fleeced,

Try to remove the seat and have a look underneath. It's a few mins job with the right tools.
You probably won't have to disconnect airbag loom underneath, just tilt seat so you can see properly.

    A cheap part plus labour.

Give it a go yourself or at the very least tell the garage what part you need +cabel and what's wrong with it. If you go in saying you don't know what's wrong with it then the chances of you being taken for a ride increases. They may charge you an extra hour of labour as diagnosis bllix.

That's great remove the seat .... But what happens !! When seat is fully back covering the two rear bolts to release the drivers seat from the floor.

OP didn't mention position but yeah it may be tricky. OP, you can remove other seat and see how it is supposed the look underneath, then root around the bad seat and see if you can fix it that way.

This is the DIY forum after all...
