Just looking for a recommendation for a phone with a decent battery life and 4G and that's not excessively big. There aren't many other must-haves, though either 16GB onboard or SD card slot would be preferable. Budget is up to €250.

I was looking at the xperia sp for 220 but reviews are very negative on the battery life.

It's for an elderly lady getting her first mobile, FWIW.

Moto g 4g with sd card slot is out in a few weeks if you can wait £150

I was kind of hoping to get it for her this week, but if it'll be available soon it might be worth a wait.

    Any other suggestions?

The current Moto G is available with 16gb on board, if you can do without 4g. It's dropped in price on amazon since the version above was announced.

She really just has those three stipulations. Not sure how much she plans on using the internet on it but I guess or the future it does make sense to get a 4G compatible device.
