I was of the impression that even with an automatic, an injured leg meant you were off the road, no?

Ive known people to drive an automatic with a broken left leg. Whether it was legal or not is another matter!

No medical fit to drive springs to mind. Even more so if it is right leg.

Rental car place might look for doctor conformation he is fit to drive.

Either way bankhoilday weekend you'll not get a deal on car rental no matter what car it is.

Some of the hire companies have VW UP! with ASG automated manual gearboxes; they're not a good alternative to an auto but they do the job.

Buying a banger nissan march cvt and selling it on for what you paid for it a few weeks later might be a better option or even a luxobarge under 1k for a month or two without tax.

Just after having a left knee op. I'm off the road for a couple of days and I have an auto. The requirement for getting back on the road is being able to emergency stop, if you're friend has never driven an auto before they'll be using the left leg by mistake and could be more dangerous with left foot braking. I practiced left foot braking for when I was using cruise control, no foot rest beside the accelerator, took me a while to get the feeling for it and I had 2 good legs at the time.

By driving with the knee injury they are risking their insurance cover, it's based on utmost good faith, if they don't inform the company.
