Mk5 astra 1.4 possible oil issue

As above I have the mk5 1.4 astra and it seems to be very thirty for oil, I only have the car about 9 months but every couple weeks it takes nearly a litre of oil, I have asked around and checked online and it seems this car is known for its oil consumtion. Its a 2005 year car with 82000kms on the clock, its not drove hard and is used for work and back everyday.

I ask now for advise as today I was dangerously low on oil after checking it even after tropping it up at the weekend but I did do a 300 mile trip this week driving all combined but the low light never came on but the dip stick was dry.

Is there a certain oil I should use to combat this problem without having to have an engine rebuilt?

Any blue smoke out of it? There's a breather membrane in the cam-cover in them that tends to cause problems with crankcase venting at about that mileage. They're not cheap at €150-200, but it could be a lot worse. Use a good-quality full-synthetic and whatever you do, do not use a higher-viscosity oil in it.
