I know a girl who traded in her '07 Alfa up North so yes it can be done.

Following on from this, a dealer in the North has offered to take mine as a trade in, however how would I claim the VRT rebate from Revenue ? Because Revenue says you need to provide proof the car has been registered in the foreign jurisdiction? I don't know / care what the NI delership does with my car after I give it to them - they may register it as a UK car (in which case I need to pester them for proof, and even so they might take months to get around to it) or they might just scrap it...

    Thanks

The dealer is most likely selling it straight on to a southern dealer. Not much demand for an Opel badge up North and most likely won't want to go through the hassle of having to change the speedo to mph in order to register it up there.

It's Charles Hurst in Belfast so most likely selling to straight to Charles Hurst Dublin? So only option really is try to squeeze another grand out of them (That' roughly what I'd have got for vrt rebate)

Dealers are taking southern cars as trade-ins. Just did it myself couple of weeks ago, traded this in https://www.usedcarsni.com/2005-SAAB-9-3-1-8i-VECTOR-irish-reg-174626432 against a VW CC. Dealer gave me £800 for it. I was delighted as selling this in the south would have been a pain. Dealer had suggested he would pass it on to a dealer in the republic but seems to have changed his mind. I also managed to get a motor tax refund based on a receipt showing the Saab was used as a trade-in. No VRT rebate as the car was too old.

How easy is it to reclaim the VRT on a vehicle ?

I bought a bike in Belfast and will probably trade it back in sometime in the future with the same place.

Hi - can you get a refund pro rata on however many months are left since you renewed your motor tax> That's good if you can coz my old car was €390 only paid in October, new one from North should be €104 only.

So the receipt from the dealer should list details of my Irish car? That's all the proof motor tax office need?
