Open Singles (4 person groups)

Trying to book an open singles for Monday for myself and my friend. It really annoys me that most of the open singles comps have 4-person groups. It takes forever to finish the round and take the enjoyment out of it.

So will probably just play a friendly game at my own club.

You'd be better off sitting at home as you'll only take the enjoyment out of playing partners with your whinging.

lol, to be honest I agree with this. Fourballs for open singles adds to the enjoyment as you can pair off and have a good match between 2 pairs. Just go out and enjoy yourself. If the extra length of the round really bugs you then there are ways around this. Book an early slot i.e. first out means you can dictate the pace and play with individuals of a similiar ilk to yourself. You will also need to book weeks in advance for these lucrative slots (which shouldn't be a problem if it bothers you so much).

    Interesting thoughts.

I just find that these rounds can be interminably long, often up to 5 hours. Invariably there will be at least one slowcoach in each group. In general visiting players will be unfamiliar with the course they are playing. In addition, there is a general malaise in the game whereby club players are getting slower and slower, due to reading the advice of gurus, self-help books and the like.

If that's whingeing, so be it!

I play in a fourball most Sunday mornings and we often keep pace with a 3 ball ahead of us so we're not all slowcoaches just because we play in 4's!

If you want to play 18 holes in less than 3 hours buy a Playstation.

It all depends on the individuals. Some 4's will still be quicker than a lot of 3's. Varies either way

Guess you wont be playing Kileen Castle on Sunday then!

    "Sunday 1st June 2014 - Black Sunday - Singles (4 ball) - €50pp - Black Tees (7,677 yards), (12pm - 1.50pm)"

Wonder what CSS is off these sticks usually

I can get over 4 in a group for open singles. But a few weeks ago in open singles in Newcastle West, my dad and me were put out with 2 members. One guy was grand, nice guy, good golfer. The other guy wasn't playing in the competition apparently. Anyway, he was 50 yards ahead of us, then 50 yards behind us, off looking for golf balls, then taking the putting very serious, getting us to move markers etc and he was also a golf swing expert. He eventually left after 16 holes.

TBH I found it very annoying. If he wasn't playing in the competition he shouldn't have been put out with us, but maybe he was out for a 0.1. The pro shop was closed when we came in, otherwise I would have complained. The only way I will be returning there for singles is if I know who my playing partners are beforehand.
