Checking engine and gearbox mounts

The Stilo has developed a shudder while pulling away in 1st. There's no weird knocking, whining, graunching or slippage, just a shudder. I'm hoping there's nothing wrong with the gearbox but for the purpose of education and the process of elimination, is it possible for one check the engine and gearbox mountings and the big question is can I replace these myself without any special tools if necessary?

Umm, replacing the engine and gearbox mounts will most likely involve pulling the entire powertrain! This could be a misfire, or it could be the clutch slipping. I had something similar years ago on an old Mondeo - at first I was full-sure some fairly fundamental lump of metal had snapped - and it turned out one of the spark-plugs had broken.

could be a judder in the clutch.

The engine and gearbox mounts are ok or the whole lot would be sitting on the ground :-)

There is another mounting at the back of the engine/gearbox that restricts movement front and backwards you will need to get under the car to check it just prise it forward and back see is there any splits in the rubber.

But my money would be on a faulty clutch and it could cause that mount to split with the juddering.

Ok, your thoughts on clutch or engine mounts is valid for this fault. Open bonnet start engine, stand at drivers door and rev engine, not much, just blip it on and off. if you see a lot of engine movement it is your middle mount. Clutch judder not as common.

When I say mount damage, it does not mean its broken, just worn and moving too much. Wont make your engine sit on the ground.:)
