Selling on Ebay - item returned?

I have been 9 years shopping on ebay and only 2 last week sold my first item for some extra money?

Sold it to a guy in the states. Sent it by registered post the day after the item was sold.

There was an attempted delivery on Tuesday.

Now, I dont know what way the postal system works over there and if they would try and attempt delivery again.

Or if its on the way back to me. I dont know.

But if its on the way back to me again, what's the best way to proceed when it gets to me?

    Offer a full refund?

Offer to send it again + p&p again?

    Or offer them a refund - p&p ?

I don't know how the USPS handle their deliveries but I would assume that it is like it is in Ireland, if you are not home then you get a note telling you to go to the sorting office to collect your parcel. If you don't turn up after a few days then the item goes back to the seller. A failed delivery is not uncommon, in that many people are not at home during the day and will therefore pick the parcel up from the sorting office the next day.

You could contact the buyer and telling them that you noticed the failed delivery and just wanted to check if everything is alright. He might not have seen the failed delivery attempt note. If it does come back to you then contact the buyer and see what they want to do. If they still want the item then you will have to ask them to pay you the P&P charges again through PayPal (after all it's not your fault it wasn't delivered). If they no longer want the item then you could offer them a refund of the item amount less the P&P charges, you can do this through PayPal. You will presumably still be out the cost of the listing fee and final value fee from eBay as you won't get that back.
