Sky Record blocking signal

I have a Sky box with the card removed for Freesat. Occasionally I can't record programmes onto dvd - I get the message "record blocking signal detected"

Is there any way around this?

It's to stop people recording certain content. There are machines to get around this, but they're grey area. Put your message into Google, and you'll probably find the device.

As I said, the error message comes up when the content owner doesn't want anyone recording it.

Why would Channel 4 block recording? It only happens occasionally so it's not a blanket block.

Has anyone else come across this with Freesat?

The programmes have HD content protection (HDCP).

No its not a blanket block. Most are at the request of the copyright owners and are normally HD US TV series or blockbuster films. The blocking is done by control flags sent out with the transport stream of the programme, so can be on individual program itself.

Channel 4 have asked me for detailed information. They seem to think that it shouldn't be blocked.

Hi Discodog, you're actually viewing free sat(ellite) channels via a Skybox :)

Freesat doesn't have the same problem according to excollier.

Freesat is a service provider with its own box - just like Sky.

It likes like Sky are applying the blocking signal without permission from Channel 4

You could be right but the odd thing is that it's infrequent & random. I only notice when I go to playback the recording.

I will have to log every time it happens & then go back to the broadcaster.

If you like archiving programming to DVD I would (very seriously) recommend getting a non-Sky satellite receiver with a hard drive. That way you could record and archive to DVD to your heart's content.

Even better, if you had a satellite receiver that allowed a hard drive connection via USB you could archive to USB sticks and/or hard drives ;)

I want to get a Foxsat PVR :-)

Make sure you do before there are none left - good deal at Humax Direct Managers Specials last week.
I am having no problems with Channel 4 myself with Freesat, maybe it's a regional thing, but I am experiencing no difficulties with Ch 4 (SD or HD) - Have been recording Fargo (CH 4 HD) since it started, never missed yet.
Perhaps Raydon's software along with Nowster's HD patch helps me though.

    Hi excollier,

Maybe Fargo isn't affected though; as Discodog say it's
    infrequent & random
    .

Discodog, are there any programmes it always happens on and maybe excollier could test it at that time.

Well, I can only say that personally, I have had no issues, so I must keep an eye out for problems, so thanks for the heads up.

    Interesting.

Having said what I said in the last post I remembered Discodog said this:

All very strange to be fair :)

:o I misread this.....I don't copy to dvd, just record to HDD on Freesat...my apologies!!:o:o
Although with the Foxsat you could pull the .ts file off it's hard drive through your home network and then try to convert it to a dvd format.......or stream it from the Foxsat.

None left? Are they being deleted?

Yes, production ceased a while ago, but factory re-furbs keep popping up - keep an eye out for them, they are very flexible once the firmware has been changed.

Humax where one of the Freesat products that where encrypting ALL content regardless of its flag.

As I recall, it was an unofficial patch through the Hummy community that released a fix for this "mistake". It existed also on the Fox T2's but you could edit the offset @ 0x3DC and change the flag.

Only the HD stuff was encrypted to that device, but that is overcome, as you say, with third party firmware updates and patches.....no more HD encryption.
