Mega Drive Issues

So yeah, got a new Mega Drive today off eBay, modded with 60hz and language switches.

I've been seeing frame rate issues on a lot of games though, feels like dropped frames, really annoying. Aladdin for example, his jump appears as only 3-4 frames of animation, with a tonne of ghosting. Any idea why this would be happening?

I can try and record a video of it to show exactly what I mean.

    EDIT:

Might be hard to tell from video, but in Sonic, it feels like the whole frame shudders for a split second. It's definitely more noticeable while playing. Also, is the blue line along the left hand side normal? This is in 60hz mode btw

Looks like some one made a balls of the 60 hz mode. Might just be the switch needs to be fixed due to it shorting a switching between timings.

As for the bar on the left hand side, if you are playing in RGB sometimes it can be off centre.

Know of anyone around Dublin who'd be able to take a look at it?

Talk to Myrrdin or Kerbdog, though the latter is up to his proverbials at the mo.
And I don't know if Myrrdin is routinely offering modding services, but you could ask him nicely!

LCDs can also cause odd issues with old consoles. I've seen some really bizarre stuff over the years with them. It looks like that could also be the issue.

Before cracking the console open, try it with another TV.

I had the same thought myself, on my plasma there's a setting for colour settings, & if it's set to auto when playing anything ntsc it jumps like that. When I set it the colour settings to ntsc it's perfect.

Yeah there's image processing going on with LCDs which some console's don't like. (Upscaling, smoothing etc)

I know some TVs have a 'game' mode, might be worth trying to find that.

o1s1n, you're a legend. Changed the TV to the "Game" preset and it works flawlessly. Funnily enough, I usually set my consoles to the preset, but I didn't even think of it in this case.

Remind me to get you a pint sometime! :P

Nice and easy fix there. Stupid TVA trying to make things better by altering the picture. You wouldn't get that on a CRT!

I know, another reason to "upgrade" I guess :P

The blue border on the left hand side of the video, what's the reason for that? Is it caused by a difference in how LCDs and CRTs handle resolution?

I'll send you my address, feel free to post out a slab :D

Delighted it worked for ya! Just had a hunch after reading up recently on LCD lag and image processing issues.

That's completely normal. You can get rid of it by adjusting the horizontal positioning of the picture - might need to get into the factory menu on your TV though.

You get the same issues with CRTs and need to manually adjust the pots to move the image around. My Megadrive looks the exact same as that on the Sony PVM. (But in this case, the pots are inside the tv beside the flyback and under the gun. Scary!)

It could be the RGB cable as I said, sometimes the TV displays RGB off centre.
