New animated film from the studio behind last years Free Birds, although don't hold that against them.

Produced by Guillermo del Toro with the voices of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana and Channing Tatum (weirdly) and many others.

This looks absolutely stunning and the story sounds pretty interesting too.

That's a gorgeous-looking aesthetic all right, the Mexican folklore styling really make for a colourful, refreshing change from the somewhat interchangeable output of Hollywood CGI films.

Though for comparisons my brain keeping reaching to games such as Grim Fandango and the more recent Guacamelee, the latter being also set in Mexico with a strong use of motifs from the Day of the Dead.

just back from this today and i thought it was brilliant !

came very close to just letting this one pass by and im delighted i didnt.

its more of a kiddie orientated animated film than one for the adults . but its still gorgeous to look at, has some wonderful humor in it, and is a great tale revolving around mexian folklore.

the voice acting it top notch too. i loved perlman in this. he kept reminding me of James woods when he played hades in disneys hercules (IIRC :) )

the imagary may be a little frightening for the very young or sensitive . but those that like the macabre will lap it up and all in all i though this was a very charming film.

    8/10.

i left the cinema with a smile :)

I'm sure I read that Diego Luna sings in it himself

I saw it last week and thought it was ok. I found some of the choice of voice actors a bit jarring tbh, particularly Ice Cube, just felt very out of place for the setting. More jarring than that though were the song choices, I think it would have been a lot better if they had actual mexican folk songs rather than the the likes of mumford and sons or Lapdance by NERD (seriously).

It was enjoyable enough overall though and the visuals were great, just a shame they didn't go all out with a more authentic cultural vibe.

Pretty much agree with all of this. Brought the little one to see it and i think i was looking forward to it more than her, but in the end i felt slightly disappointed with it. It wasnt a terrible movie but it definitely felt a little disjointed. Another strange song choice to add to the list was Creep by Radiohead

I laughed out loud at that bit.
