    Hey

Basically, if I get horizon in, they will take my current router as the new box and router are one.

The new box will be in the sitting room which is seperated from the room with my pc in it by the hallway.

I was thinking homeplugs rather than drilling holes and running cables.

Would they be up to gaming, eso, wow , eve online and the likes or would I have to go with the cable?

Anyone had to do this already?

    Cheers

It's not quite the same situation, but we've recently got Horizon in our house, and tl;dr I've been trying to convince my parents to run cables for months.

I'm using homeplugs at the minute, but they cap out at around 8MB/s (64Mb/s). It's perfectly fine for browsing, downloading, etc. (though it's only a fraction of our 200Mb connection) but for file transfers and streaming over LAN (which happens quite a lot, because most of our stuff is on a server) it's not great. Backups are a pain in the balls, for instance.

If you can, I'd just run cables. It'll be simpler in the long run.

UPC will de-consolidate the Horizon box and router for a €40 fee if you want. Then you could keep your router where it is, and still get horizon tv.

That's interesting, because I called them recently and they didn't mention that as an option. Will have to look into that, cheers.

    How does that work?

Will the router continue to broadcast wifi for the house or just act as a bridge for my pc and have the horizon box provide wi fi?

Part of the reason I am thinking of upgrading is because when im gaming, ESO or wow, the wireless signal seems to get very weak.
I thought it might be down to congestion in the evening but maybe im just using a good chunk of the bandwidth?

Seems unlikely but its hard to tell.

First, very important note: The horizon box has SHOCKING wifi. Its got a crappy internal antenna packed in right beside 5 cable decoders, a modem and a ton of other stuff. The Cisco units, while still crap, have miles better coverage.

    When you deconsolidate:
    • Horizon does TV only, can still record 5 channels etc
    • Cisco/Thompson hosts phone and broadband. Acts as router and wireless transmission point.

Its also worth reading about just how horizon performs:

Thats just one example, and a forum like that will always get the worst of the worst, but it seems like it really is a poor PVR/DVR unit. Lots of people saying it wont record series for them.

Maybe I should just buy some homeplugs to extend the wi fi signal.

We realised tonight that the baby monitor seems to be interferring with the signal alot.

Probably no way of getting around that, two wireless devices, bound to be problems.

If you invest in a 5GHz router and adapters, that should help with the interference problems.

Just got a new upc router today, it has 5ghz on it. There are lots of neighboring wi fi networks nearby too.
Out of interest , which adapters are easy to set up to clone the network?

I put a set of Tp ones in my parents house and the cloning process led to some strong language. Probably mostly because the upc router would not play ball.

Could not for the life of me get 5ghz to work when I tried from my EPC3925 and then after that my Asus RT-N66U. All Wifi-N devices with 5ghz capability. I heard it has more trouble with walls than 2.4ghz bit even in the same room I couldn't get it to work.

Very lucky I did 2 runs of cat5e to every room in the house so it's only problematic fir phones and iPads.
