    Age: 21

    Gender: Male

    Named drivers experience: 3years

    Mileage. 400.773 P/W

    Budget: E950 for car only.

So I was looking at a 1.2 Punto, but due to a job offer that I'm not getting anymore :( I'm going to start off with a one liter, mainly for the couch money tax. My main aim is to get a bullet proof whip. So looking at Japanese whips. It's only going to be to get up and down from college every week.

    What I like..
    Suzuki swift 1.0
    Micra k10 k11
    toyota starlet.
    etc.

    Suggestions welcome..

    Thanks.

Hi Colm thanks for your suggestion..

What's your opinion of the swift?

    Any common faults?

They're a grand little yoke. Not exactly refined, or fast, or anything but a good micra alternative that doesn't have as much of a Noddy stigma

Lol at the micra having a Noddy stigma. :D

Anyway, ah ya speed is the last thing I'm worried about.

Do these suffer from rust? Just some thing that scares the bejassus out of me.

While I do like the swift I'd like to have another car in mind, so what would be your second suggestion?

I'm really open to any cheap 1 litre..

Well, I don't like them, but they make sense.

That model swift suffers from rust. Have a good look for it underneath and in the engine bay.

They are a grand car other than that and they are very reliable but they are very lightly built.

    Hi John Boy.

Ah right, So will a swift with low mileage have a less chance of rust or one that was one the go, with higher mileage? Or does it make a difference?

Mileage has very little to do with a car having rust. Rust will form on a car at any mileage unless the car spent all it's life garaged.

Sometimes low milage cars have more rust than the higher mileage equivalent, especially if they aren't kept indoors and are left sitting out in the elements.

As bazz says though, mileage will have little to do with it. There are many other factors to consider, like where the car is located. A car that's located near the sea or regularly driven on salted roads will be expected to have more rust than a car that's not exposed to salt. The quality of rust protection is another factor. Some cars have better rust protection than others and can withstand the elements better.

On a car of that age however the only way to know if its rusty or not is to inspect it and have a good look over it.

At 13 years old even cars with good rust protection will be expected to have some degree of rust though, albeit light rust.

I wouldn't be expecting that Suzuki to be completely rust free underneath but if it only had a small bit of surface rust I wouldn't worry about it. Its the heavier stuff that can be an issue.

Thanks lads, that seems to have been a strange quistion now that I read it.

But doesn't the N.C.T check for rust.. So a car with a fresh n.c.t shouldn't have that much rust underneath..?

I'm also temped with a starlet, as they seem quite cheap and cheerful. Whats your options?

    Thanks.

Very good headspace in a Fiat Punto, plenty of room for me and i'm 6'1.

Ford Fiesta(the newer models) have good headroom also.

@op, if you can up your budget just the tiniest bit here is a very nice VW Lupo with an interesting history!

Its a bit of a spin (presuming you're in Dublin) but could be well worth it (if the description is accurate)?
