I have some extensive work to be done including a 29 year-old top-front 6 bridge that needs replacing (hopefully with implants), some old alloy fillings that need replacing and some new ones, and at least 2 other implants on the bottom-rear. I've heard a lot about travelling to Budapest to have the work done, anybody got any personal experiences/reviews/reccomendations on any particular clinic?

I wouldn't recommend it to my family/ friends or patients.

    Read this thread

This guy was gushing about the clinic, 2 years later, he has to go back for a big retreatment at his own expense and he still thinks he got a good deal!!!!

Also, check out a dental tourism clinic's agent posting in the thread about how she got loads of treatment done and shilling the clinic.... We later saw that the clinics facebook was robbing before and after clinical photos from other clinics websites (mine included)....

This is cowboy stuff and I wouldn't let them drill holes in my head....

Really???...I'm shocked - there seems to be so many raving testimonials from well-known people on the internet - even an Irish Times journalist ?

OP, the Dental Issues forum is the wrong place to ask about Budapest/Eastern European clinic recommendations. The perception is that a query of this sort is more suited to the RipOff Ireland or Bargain Alert section.
You will find numerous posts here from patients here dissatisfied with the treatment from their Irish dentist. And yet interestingly, you won't find a single post on this forum from a patient who is dissatisfied with treatment from a clinic in Budapest/Eastern Europe- or at least, I've yet to see one
Implants are an extremely complex& specialised form of dentistry, and once placed are extremely difficult to remove. They require 3-4monthly hygiene maintenance visits for the remainder of your lifetime.
Therefore, measure twice, cut once;) Best of luck.

The internet would never lie to you kingaaa!!!:)

Papers and journalists endorse clinics if there is money or free treatment in it for them... I don't get the big endorsements because I don't take out half page ads in the papers and don't provide free treatment.....

Go in with your eyes open....

@Oral Surgeon : Any harm to ask what part of the country approximately you practise in?

Oral Surgeon, the reporter wasn't actually giving an endorsement as such, but more of a like-for-like comparrison :

Cost-wise, it is probably my only option for the type of work I want to have, a friend of mine was attacked in the city centre last year and had a front tooth knocked out - it cost him over €2000 for one implant, I'm hoping for at least 6 !!!

If that is not an endorsement, then I don't know what is!!! I have some very happy patients in my clinic and they don't go writing essays about me, there's usually something more to the story.... discounted treatment for a big up in the papers/ TV3/ late late show....

Be careful that you don't get into cheap treatment that you cant afford to fix.

The more I read about dental tourism, the more sceptical I am becoming - but the big issue I have is the price. I haven't actually been for a consultation, but I know I'm looking at a BIG bill for what I want done - so much so that I probably couldn't afford the cost. OS, you seem to be a knowledgable chap, maybe you could advise me on some of my options ? My main concern is my top front 6. I had a tooth knocked out in 1984 and had a denture made. In 85 I moved to London where I broke my one remaining top-front tooth in half. When I went to the dentist he advised me to have a bridge installed which meant shaving-down the 2 teeth either side of the damaged/missing front teeth. Now 29 years later the bridge is ill-fitting against the gum and I believe they only have a certain life-span, so I'm nervous it will just pop out of my mouth one of these days ! So this would be my major work, anything else after this could be a working progress. What would I be looking at price wise in Dublin for a replacement bridge? would implants be a feesable alternative, and would there be a huge gulf in cost between the two? I know an examination would be neccesary for an exact diagnosis - I'm just talking ball-park figures....maybe I'm looking for some good news to convince me to stay in Dublin for treatment, which I really would prefer - having extensive dental work is not my idea of a holiday!!

If that is not an endorsement, then I don't know what is!!! I have some very happy patients in my clinic and they don't go writing essays about me, there's usually something more to the story.... discounted treatment for a big up in the papers/ TV3/ late late show....

We can't diagnose over the internet but your options could possibly be: removable partial denture, new bridge or implants and crowns. Unfortunately the rules of the forum prohibit discussions of price.

It's not a like for like comparison. At the end he talks about his work which cost €4172 and a friends work that cost €15000. We have no idea what the friend had done (could have been extensive implant work with grafting, we don't know). At current prices I estimate that his work would cost about €6750 (€100 per fill, €700 per crown, €500 for inlay, €2800 for a four unit bridge and cleaning for 50 - you will find cheaper than this in Ireland). He also says "teeth sorted for the rest of my days" which made me lol.

I know I'm breaking the forum rules by talking about relative price but I just wanted to poke a few holes in that rubbish, ill informed and misleading opinion piece.

I understand Big G. I dontreally want to go down the denture options route - this was my main reason for getting a bridge in the first place, I had a denture and hated it.

The difference between the two prices you quoted I could live with - do most clinics offer payment plans?

P.S. Sorry to seem pushy, but I'm trying to make a decision before next week - I have an appointment consultation next friday with the Irish end of one of these clinics, it's over the oppisite side of the city to me so I dont want to waste my time (or their's) if I'm not going through with it.

The way I usually work it is 50% at commencement and the balance paid off over the remainder of treatment time. Other clinics may do this differently. Obviously if everything is being done in two visits it's not really a payment plan but usually there is diagnosis, study models, X-rays etc. Then if the work is more complex and there are changes to the bite there is sometimes deprogramming or with implants there is usually a minimum of 4 months healing time so this can spread costs out. Why don't you get a few consultations with local dentists don't cancel your trip to the Hungarians and then decide? You are not committed to any treatment after a consult. Some clinics offer free consults for advanced work (although I would be careful of expecting a lot from a free consult). Someone once said to me when buying something big always get three estimates...

Sounds like a plan Big G.... are reccomendations for Dublin dentists allowed on the Forum? I'm around the Dublin 5 area, obviously if there was a reccomended dentist around the area it would be better than having to travel far.....
