In second week of a SOLAS course. I got paid today for last week. I got confused by the meaning of arrears and thought I'd have got double this week but I was clearly wrong as I now know the meaning. But i now owe money out as I had none last week. Was I supposed to collect a social welfare payment last week or was I basically expected to try support myself on nothing last week?

Yep, you have to support yourself for the week, not only this be warned, you are only entitled to 3 paid days off (sick + Cert) in any 3 month period, any more and you're not paid.
