GSi did not respond to calls and e-mails. Its Edinburgh marathon Facebook website tells participants: “All your personal data and information, including your running times, are treated with great respect.

“As such your result information is available to you. We will only openly publish the top three finishers of each race.

“You will need to log in to get your times, splits and finishing position within the race. You can then choose to share this information as you see fit.”

For some reason the big local 10km and half marathon each year don't publish a proper list of results either, and they only give chip time based position so you have people from wave 2 or 3 of the race being listed higher up the results than people in wave 1.

Don't know why some races find it so confusing the idea of just printing out a list of who crossed the line in what order and their time.

On an slightly unrelated note, I just saw in the results of the Edinburgh marathon that Japhet from the book "Running with the Kenyans" finally made his big breakthrough he'd been dreaming of, coming 2nd overall. He was brought over to the race from Kenya through a crowdfunding project, this being his 2nd effort after coming short last year. Great book and really nice story, see here

Back on topic, what a strange decision really taking data protection to another level. What about runners who need to prove a time for qualification to another marathon, usually you need to provide a URL to a results list. Besides, everyone loves to have a gawk at friends and fellow club members results, not to mention those strangers you battled with around the course, it's bizarre.

Ya but what makes it totally pointless and annoying is that you can get round it by looking for the pictures for a bib number or surname. When the pictures come up it says something like: Congratulations you finished in a time of x:xx:xx here are your pictures :D

This is poor but not surprising. It just means that other races will probably have to expressly state that the running times are public.

I would not run in a race if I could not see other people's times.

A women's only race not a million miles away from here (Dublin) used to refuse to give out the names of the "elite" runners to journalists trying to write previews on the grounds that it was against data protection regulations...
