Current specs (2 years old now):

    i5 3570k overclocked to 4.2GHz
    8GB RAM 1600Mhz
    EVGA GTX 670 FTW
    Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 650W
    AsRock z77 Extreme MoBo
    Win 7

Some of the recommended specs for upcoming games are listing 8-core cpu's, 8 GB RAM and 660 ti's / 670's.

I'm still running @ 1080p and will be for awhile. Do I need to consider upgrading?

My rig is pretty much the same as your's and I'm also thinking of upgrading it. But I am going to wait until e3, which starts early next month and see what comes out of that.
So I am going to sit on the fence for the next few weeks.

In terms of specs for games or new hardware announcements?

That's pretty much my spec which is a year old. I don't think you'll gain much from a processor/mobo upgrade. Maybe just upgrade the GPU.

Don't even consider upgrading till broadwell. and Maxwell Gpus. Then you will see worthwhile gains.

In terms of the both really.

What he said. There's not enough of a performance increase going to Haswell CPU and you would have to get a new motherboard to support them. The 670 should last okay until Maxwell finally comes out. The 780ti would be a nice (and expensive) improvement, but I think you'd be better off waiting. However, if you've money to burn sure why not get a Titan Z :)

    I jumped from a 670 to a 780, and it's quite a jump. I also have a 670 lying around if you'd like it... ;)

If you're using 1080 on a single screen does it make much difference though?

    Looks like it:

(Also, that's a very old review, drivers should have helped quite a bit since)

    No, I'd wait.

I have an overclocked i5 2500K with a 670 and won't consider upgrading the CPU and MB until Skylake http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_(microarchitecture)

and the GPU until Maxwell, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_800_series

Why would you upgrade an I5 3570k? Its one of the best gaming CPU's there is and will be good for a long long time.

Also Why would you upgrade the 670 if your only playing 1080P.

I'd wait for benchmarks of games recommending 8 cores before deciding anything.

My rig is almost 2 years old now, I have the same setup i5-3570k, 16gb ram, gigabyte gtx670oc, asrock z77 mobo.
The games I play range from older to newer ones, but I still don't have any problems with the more recent stuff like BF4 or Metro2 at decent settings.

I can't see the point in replacing equipment with stuff only 1 generation newer.
Would wait till the gtx8xx series at least.

Seems the majority agree. Only people that should be getting 8 cores are the people buying right now. Noone should be upgrading from I5 for them. Unless its the old duel core i5.

As for graphics, 670 to a 780 would be nice but is smarter to wait. No real need as of now. Next game on my radar is witcher 3 and that not till 2015. Apart from that meh. But feel free to enlighten me. E3 be interesting.

No offence against you specifically, yawhat!, but I really don't like when people say that.

People have been saying the "You won't ever need more than [X] for 1080p since I got into computers. The fact is that adding a second 670 gives you in and around a 80-90% performance boost, and there are games out there that need it. Crysis 3, Metro Last Light, Star Citizen... There will always be titles that need it.

I'm running a 780, and I game at "only" 1080p, and yet the 780 was a massive upgrade for me. Just because you have a high-end card, doesn't mean you have to drive a high resolution monitor.

Will you see a bigger relative difference between cards at a higher resolution? Yes. Are we talking about playable framerates most of the time? No. (At least, not when you add AA into the mix)

btw serpehucus, I was just reading back through the thread there. I wasn't asking if there was a very large difference for single screening gaming at 1080 between 1 vs 2 670s, I was asking if there was much of a difference in that situation between a single 670 vs a single 780.

Btw metro last light performed must fine for me with my single 670, but tbh I wasn't measuring frame rates.

It would make a big difference at 1080p, assuming you like to run games maxed out. My 7970 can struggle in a few games at 1080p max settings, for example.

Also, consider the R9 290 (non-X). Very close to 780 and way cheaper.
