Classic Car Club membership question

    Hi All,

I am in the process of getting classic car insurance for my soon to be 928. The insurance company is seeking a classic car membership number as part of the application.

Can anyone kindly recommend a club with a reasonable joining fee where I can apply and get membership and a membership number fairly quickly.

I am located in County Dublin and I am not necessarily seeking a particular car brand club (like Porsche) but one with a good mix of enthusiastic, friendly people.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions that you might have.
    Sam

Shamrock Car & Machinery Club is just €30 for per year membership, and its based in kildare, meath, dublin area

Eircooled is €25pa, while it is an 'aircooled' club, there are are few 924 owners (also 356, and 911). The club also has a deal with a couple of insurers. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month in Stillorgan(ish) and are a friendly bunch.

Does it have to be an Irish club?

The UK Porsche 924 Owners Club has a really brilliant knowledge pool, much of which is accessible only to members. If I had to join a club I'd join this as I'd be spending the cash joining this anyway.

    Have you bought the car??

    Thanks Dade,

I have bought but not collected the car yet and the insurance asked for membership of an Irish classic car club but I didn't specifically confirm the 'Irish' part.

The site you mentioned looks like an excellent site, I'll have a bit of a look around it.

Just be aware that the 924 club membership runs from February to January, but it's £25 regardless of when you join, so you'll only get 8 months membership joining now.

A lot of clubs operate like that, its probably a bad time of the year to be joing, but you'll have the benfit of it for most of the year

What company are you getting your insurance from, some clubs have deals with certian insurers?

And +1 for the Shamrock Club!

And you'll most likely be using the most in the first 6 months of ownership!

€60 seems a lot extra just to get insurance as part of a club.

My 924 insurance is about €225 pa with no restrictions or requirements.

    Thanks All,

I ended up going with Eircooled (thanks Kenny Loggins) as it was easy to do via Paypal and ran membership from March.

I had already emailed Porsche Club Ireland twice over the past week and a half but didn't receive a reply, besides as was pointed out €60 is expensive especially for 6 months.

    Thanks again for the advice.

Another thing about the 924 club is that being UK based, I don't think Irish insurers will accept it. When I was getting cover with First Ireland, I was asked about which club I was in. The woman checked a database of clubs on their system which were all Irish I think. She said she would check it out with someone else and get back to me but they were happy to take my money for a 2 car policy in the meantime. Unsurprisingly!

I was just skimming through Boards tonight, when I spotted this thread and was wondering why you needed car club membership at all for classic insurance.
What value does it hold for an insurer?

Club members are (statistically) more likely to cherish their cars, and therefore more likely to drive them carefully, and to do below-average mileage per year.

It's a similar concept to naming a partner/spouse on an everyday policy, to get a discount, as those who are married/in a long-term relationship are (statistically) more likely to be relatively careful drivers than those who are single.

Cool. I insured my 924 with First Ireland as a member of Eircooled and had to ask for confirmation as the quote was so cheap! :D

Brain in gear, fingers in neutral...meant to type 928 rather than 924 maybe I was subconsciously hoping for better fuel mileage!

Thanks again Mr Logins and Mr Dades your point on the boxster was interesting...

Ahhh, different beast altogether! Nice one. Maybe the Porsche club would have replied to a 928 query... :P

My policy through FI was €364 for social, domestic & pleasure and mileage not to exceed 6,000 p.a.

Good people to deal with, it seemed to be the most reasonable quote for that mileage level.

Sure, I'll post some photos when I get her home.

Pretty much the same what I paid 5 years ago corrected for inflation :)

Decent quote for a >300BHP supercar of yesteryear...

Hi guys, looking at a 928 myself at the moment. How many years experience do you have to have to get a Classic insurance policy? I have 3 years, 2 as named 1 in my own name - aged 28. Any hope?

Having a second car is the main restriction. Otherwise you're going to have problems.

I have a car myself for about 18 months.

    Robroy,

Dades point is important, classic insurances typically relies upon you continuing insurance on another car. Perhaps worth a phone call to First Ireland to investigate insurance options and costs before pursuing the proposed purchase too far.

928 is a good choice, there's plenty of online resources if you end up pursuing it and if have any questions just post. Parts for a 928 can be expensive, a PPI is recommended and by all means make sure everything works.

Importantly turn on ignition key to make sure all warning lights are present and illuminated before starting the car. (Not that anyone would remove any troublesome ones to disguise the typical electrical gremlins).

    Good luck.

I've never joined a club and when renewing insurance they seem fine with that, apart from anything else i'd be half afraid that insurance companies would get used to the idea of clubs and sneak in a clause where its regulated club outings only.

That does not surprise me one little bit.

PCI have nice flyers but as far as advice and technical know how are concerned they leave a lot to be desired. I dont want to be hateful but there is also a class issue with them. You have to have a 911 and a GT3 at that for them to take you on

924/928/944/968 they dont want to know you. There was a big hoo ha in that club a number of years ago and it all ended up quite bitter. I dont know if all this was dealt with but I hope it was How do I know all this I hear you ask.....?

If you want to join a Porsche specific Club then PCGB have R27 which is a nice outfit and really helpful. They are based in NI and have their meetings at various places around !

Ive PMed you the email of the main actor within the region - Very helpful and nice fella

You are doing the right thing going for a local club which caters for all
