    Hi Folks,

Went online to book the missus's car in for NCT. Its up the end of June.... but from the online booking system the earliest dates I can get are in August. Is there really that long of a wait for an NCT? And can I retax without an NCT test?

    Cheers,
    Mick

Hi mick. I had to reschedule my test from this friday and the closest date I got was August for Kells.

And no the NCT doesn't matter with tax.

According to the NCTS Customer Charter if you request an NCT appointment within 4 weeks and it cannot be provided, you are entitled to have the test carried out for free.

don't book online....phone or email, and you'll get an appointment very soon

You can get dates online, but it takes patience. You have to just keep selecting a couple of centres and you will see time slots pop up very close. I did this twice in the last couple of months, and had dates both times a week or so after booking online. They come and go quickly, but it can be done.

Two months wait time is actually an improvement: it was 3 months. ..

Make sure you don't accept / book any appointment. Call them OP and request a date within 4 weeks, only then you can avail of this "special offer".

Booking online is good if you have enough time to test before an expiry date. If there is no slot available do not book any. Call them.

Dont worry about it. Mine expired in march and I only got a date for it in June.
Gardai stopped me the other day and they basically said they didnt care. Not even joking, they didnt even want to see a confirmation text or anything.

    It was just
    "have you booked your nct?"
    "yeah a few weeks ago"
    "grand, off you go"

exact same thing happened to my friend.

Just because it happened to you and your friend doesn't mean this will happen to the OP. He received much better advice by now anyway;)

If the NCT crowd won't provide a date within 4 weeks he gets a free test.
If they do, he doesn't have to rely on advice like yours because his NCT will be up to date. There was a countless number of posters with summons being issued due to lack of an NCT test when stopped. It happens all the time - not too often, but there is a chance you get caught and penalised.

Plus it's a mandatory Court appearance, 5 points and up to €1500 fine. It's important, it's about the safety of all road users, me especially.

sorry for O/T, but it has nothing to do with safety - look up the RSA statistics for mechanical influences in accidents........

I do this every time, always get a test in around a week.

Im not sure if you remember the absolute ****heaps that used to infest our roads before the NCT, but whatever statistics might suggest, the roads are a much better place now for having some testing of cars.

It's obvious, the NTC web site is not up to the job of handling bookings properly, so it gives you the choice of a small few time slots a few months away.

Then when you phone, the person you speak to doesn't seem to have live booking information to hand, so they take your number and sort out an available slot, of which I suspect there are plenty.

All the while, we're told that the centres are 'booked up,' and we're being put on a 'priority list.' That's clearly not true, because you get a booking easily enough when you phone and let them sort it out in their own time.

Their system is essentially and old-fashioned phone-in one, which is not so bad, but they shouldn't try to con us with this 'we're all booked up' lark.

The online booking works fine for retests for some reason. Why can't they do the same for initial bookings?

Not everyone is up to date with all of this. Especially if it is someone's first car / nct test.
