Does anyone know a good place to buy German plates? Looks like they are about 30 euro on ebay but not sure of the quality and are they legal for the NCT?

NCT are starting to crack down on German font plates these days, really can depend on the tester on the day though so keep the old ones handy for the day of the test.

Actually, as long as the spacing is right, they're not illegal.
Garda's ANPR worked with mine (came up as no insurance, but that happens sometimes) and they didn't say anything about them even.
If ANPR works, most likely my plate is ok.

But it clearly says about no other markings allowed and that they have to look as pictured. It doesn't specify the font as a specific... So I guess could be down to interpretation.... Maybe

Very felt spec too! Each to their own though

It doesn't say anything in that link about the type of font that should be used on a plate. The toll/speed cameras and police should be able to interrupt the German font

    ^^they can indeed.
German Font is legal in Ireland.
Your plate must have the spacing, The country above it in Irish and the EU/country flag to the left of it.
I've driven mine countless times through checkpoints with no issues on scanners etc

Have them on my golf never had a problem with checkpoints or meeting garda cars

Plus when I stop at tollbridges it doesnt read my plate properly and says im a motorbike and charges me for that instead of car :D

I wouldn't be admitting to that here, you'll get a torrent of abuse from the usual finger pointing brigade.

I don't think i'm cool anymore... I think these look naff, like proper naff... like back in the day with the crocked GTi stickers that people used to put on the back of their car naff..

How so? It doesn't match the requirements for stroke width and height:
"The identification mark shall appear in black characters and each letter or figure shall have a height of 70 millimetres and a stroke width of 10 millimetres."

Its the height of pedandtry, and once they're readible by number plate recognition systems then I don't see what there should be an issue.

That said, the word naff has been used a few times here which is pretty spot on.

Thing is though the OP didn't ask if the looked cool or not....

so the word is that once you keep to the spacing you *may* be ok for NCT, Garda Checkpoints, etc - however if you keep your standard plates you will be ok -

I suppose at least you are fitting them to a german car.

OP, it's possible that you may never get any hassle with the plates. I'd say that ordinary local Gardai won't give a hoot, for the most part.

However, the reason that other motorists have standardised plates is that there are regulations governing the appearance, layout, and font of the plates, down to where the euro stars symbol should appear. There is actually a diagram of a plate in the regs. I can't remember where they are now.

I know of a guy who went out and got plates with an italic font. I can't remember whether he got charged or ticketed or what, but a Traffic Corps Garda pulled him up over it and gave him a bollocking.

A plate like that will draw Traffic Corps to your car. That mightn't be too bad if everything else is up to scratch. It's not fine otherwise. They are mostly sticklers for rules, as opposed to ordinary local Gardai.

There's no point in taking a chance over a fancy licence plate.

I didn't know about the latest with the NCT. Their check points are available from their website, I think.

TBH would I risk it for the potential 5k fine for something I would never look at myself....nah.....

I look at mine every day (standard plate) but that's cause the non-D reg annoys me! :(

Don't like them at all. Getting way too common but what is beyond naff is the practice of putting dummy versions of the round state and vehicle inspection seals on the plates.

Saw a 141d BMW this morning with DE style plates, tags and all. TBH it was illegible from a distance and up close was a case of trying to hard. But each to their own for definite..

I got standard plates from Eireplates recently. Arrived in 2 days by courier and are perfect, couldn't fault them. They do German ones.

Personally, I wouldn't go German font. Standard, NCT legal pressed ones stuck on with tape instead of screws looks clean and simple :)

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm just ordering a plate from eireplates.com now - €26 for 1 standard plate delivered? Is that the going rate now?

Is there anywhere in Dublin that can do German pressed plates while you wait?

    That's for a pair I would imagine.

I've been buying from these for last few cars, used to exclusively buy from eireplates but find AZ are better. The font is much neater to my eye, may very well just be me though!

My 535d are from AZ and the E90 is from Eireplates.

I think the AZ ones look much better.

Unfortunately not. The price for a single German pressed plate is €20.50 and delivery charge is an additional €5.50.

The price for a pair is €29.50 excluding delivery.

He said standard ;) €18.95 still too expensive. You can get a pair for under €20 in my local motor factors.

Thanks kceire, I'll check out AZ now. The plate on the 535 looks neater to me too, hard to tell but it looks like the font is slightly larger on the E90 and it almost interferes with the "Baile Atha Cliath" on top?

It does yeah. I have the standard plates on the E90 at the moment as it's for sale so if it sells, the new owner can decide to put them back on or buy new ones or leave well alone.

I bought them from nowplates.com, plates look great and have the Munich stamps
The police stopped me a few days later and said the letters would probably not pass the NCT as they are not standard letters
He said I could get fined up to 300 euro then told me to go on

Whether plates are legal or not should be taken out of the "descression" of the nct guys. The nct should include an ANPR test and it is a Pass or Fail in the test. Maybe an ANPR machine on the way into the centre.
